MANILA — Tropical depression Maymay intensified into a tropical storm early Wednesday morning, according to PAGASA.
It has been assigned the international name Kujira, Japanese for a large sea monster or whale.
Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 2 is now in effect over:

• Northern and Central La Union
• Northwestern Pangasinan
• Southwestern Abra
• Western Mountain Province
• Northwestern Benguet
Meanwhile, the rest of mainland Northern Luzon and parts of Central Luzon are under wind signal no. 1:

Strong winds may be experienced in these areas in the coming hours, with minimal to moderate impacts expected.
As of 4 a.m. Wednesday, the tropical storm was located 170 kilometers west northwest of Bacnotan, La Union.
It now has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hours with gustiness up to 80 kph and is moving southeastward slowly.
Maymay will move eastward and may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union later this afternoon or evening.
It will weaken steadily while crossing the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon and may be downgraded into a low pressure area by Thursday afternoon or evening, August 6.

By Friday, Habagat, enhanced by the approaching Typhoon Dolphin, will affect Luzon and most of Visayas.
Moderate to heavy rains may be expected in Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique.
The risk of widespread and serious flooding and landslides is high across many parts of Luzon.
Outside the Philippine area of responsibility, Typhoon Dolphin was located 1,845 kilometers east northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
It has sustained winds of 165 kph and gusts up to 205 kph. It is moving westward at 20 kph.
PAGASA is not ruling out the possibility of Dolphin entering the PAR but it will remain far from land. However, it will enhance the Habagat through the weekend.
It may be assigned the local name Neneng once it enters the PAR.
The public is advised to continue monitoring updates on the weather and take the necessary preparations.
