Beth Sevilla-Mora (Charlie Dizon) is among the fiercest and most-talked-about characters in “What Lies Beneath,” with her outspoken personality that would mostly stir up unpleasing reactions from other characters or viewers who would find it difficult to connect with her.
Aside from that, she is also one of the most relatable figures in the show in the ways in which she navigates her insecurities, pride, and the emotional weight of social comparison—things the majority of us would also find difficult to work on.
#1: Beth admits her deep-seated fears to Ryan
After Ryan (Yves Flores) overheard Alice (Janella Salvador) and Beth’s (Charlie Dizon) argument about admitting their mistakes against Edong (Jake Cuenca) fourteen years ago, Ryan and Beth engaged in a tearful conversation, particularly with Beth’s expressions of regret about the life she’s currently living.
Frightened, Beth opened up about how she feared Chloe’s (Jewel Milag) possible disappointment once she considered admitting to falsely accusing Edong of Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia). It was more about losing the respect and admiration that Chloe has for her—something Beth stressed as the only things she has.
Hearing Beth’s sentiments, Ryan felt immense hurt at Beth feeling inadequate despite the loving family she has and went on to emphasize that Alice never belittled her, showing how heavily Beth devalued herself.
#2: Beth comes face-to-face with Ryan’s pain
Days after Beth and Ryan’s emotional exchange and Ryan eventually deciding to cooperate with Erica’s (Kaila Estrada) investigation about Louisa’s true murderer, Ryan expressed a greater degree of heartbreak, recalling Beth’s words about being deprived of a successful life.
He asked Beth about the dreams she let go of to build their family and remarked that he would heal in time but reassured her that no matter what happens, he would still love Beth unconditionally.

In the aftermath of Edong causing Chloe’s trauma by leaving behind a dead cat on her bed, Beth took the choice of actively engaging in Erica, Alice, Marco (Race Matias), and Lucas’ (JM de Guzman) investigation.
When they were about to head home, Alice and Erica made her reconsider joining in publicly admitting their mistakes in the past that unjustly imprisoned Edong for fourteen years. Frustrated at their repetitive attempts, Beth strongly refused again, scared that Chloe would think less of her once the truth resurfaced.
For Beth, if Chloe was in her shoes, she wouldn’t be intimidated by Celestino’s (Bart Guingona) threats. Regarding the lie that Beth started, she also confessed that it seemed as if it was the only right thing to do to give justice to Louisa’s death.
Erica chimed in, emphasizing that Chloe is a smart kid who would understand the complicated decisions they have made in the past, but Beth fired back at Erica, saying that she wouldn’t understand since she’s all alone in her life.

With Beth’s regrets about her life affecting everyone in her family, Chloe then became the center of their talks. Through tears, Chloe questioned why Beth couldn’t answer when Ryan asked if she would still choose their family if given the chance.

Moments after Beth and Chloe’s poignant discourse, Beth rushed to contact Ryan at the repair shop. During their talk, she recalled Chloe’s angered comments on how Beth was the one who taught her about valuing honesty and making corrupt politicians take accountability for their shortcomings but was also a liar herself.

Edong took his long-awaited revenge against Beth by doing the same thing she had done to him in the past, but only through the innocent Ryan. After beating the abusive Anton Montenegro (Jameson Blake) to death, Edong framed Ryan for it, bringing Anton’s body to his repair shop, rendering Ryan unconscious, and planting evidence for him to be easily accused.
With panic that settled in her bones, Beth decided to throw away her pride, kneeling in front of Erica, apologizing for ostracizing her for years. Yearning for Ryan to be freed, she begged Erica to legally defend Ryan, and the rest of MABEL embraced her.

Wanting a fresh start in their relationship, especially without lies, Beth then opens up a long-buried truth about herself to Ryan, wherein she had almost left him and a one-year-old Chloe (Jewel Milag) years ago.
In that memory, the legal wife of Beth’s father ultimately encouraged her to choose a life she truly wants for herself and not one dictated by the expectations of others. Beth eventually returned home, hid her letter and suitcase, and realized that being with her family was her most beautiful dream.
Ryan emphasized that he’s just glad that Beth returned and chose them for a lifetime.
