From mysteries and injustices to the complexities of relationships, “What Lies Beneath” masterfully showcases stories that define each character’s essence while offering lessons for viewers to reflect on.
One of the most nerve-racking yet heartwarming narratives in the series is that of Alice Quintana-Miller (Janella Salvador) and Scott Miller (Mark Neumann), whose journey evolves from a fairy-tale-like romance to one marked by distrust, ultimately culminating in the rekindling of their marriage.
With that said, these ten scenes take us back to Alice and Scott’s enduring love, no matter how it is shaped by the circumstances they face.
#1: Alice chases after Seth and Scott
In the course of Alice’s resurfacing trauma—which she mistakenly associates with Scott—she treats him with intense suspicion each day after he arrives in the Philippines to visit. No matter how much Scott proves he has done nothing wrong, she continues to insist on her accusations.
One day, when Scott brings Seth (Rhys Stevens) to a nearby ice cream shop, Erica (Kaila Estrada), who happens to be in the same place, witnesses Alice’s frantic behavior as she catches up to them. Fearful, Alice thought that Scott might take Seth away from her, especially since they were in the middle of a divorce.
#2: Scott shares about his pain of being denied clarity by Alice
The more Alice experiences cryptic flashbacks of her forgotten trauma, the more she pushes Scott away without explanation, leaving him in a constant state of confusion. From Alice’s perspective, Scott may be masking an abusive side of himself.
This suspicion reaches another peak when Scott asks Seth again to go with him to the ice cream shop. As Seth is assisted by Rose, Alice immediately confronts Scott, questioning whether he has returned to the Philippines to bring Seth back to the U.S., amid their ongoing custody battle.
Baffled by Alice’s allegations, Scott grows more concerned about what transpired the night before, when Alice had suffered a nightmare and sleepwalked inside her room. With Seth inside the room, she unknowingly frightens him to tears.
Despite Scott’s continued search for answers, Alice remains silent. He then reasons that he is no longer obligated to answer her questions either, given the lack of clarity she has given him.
#3: Alice and Scott meet each other’s gaze
During one of their calmer days amid the lingering tension, Alice, Scott, and Seth visit a mall with Mel (Sue Ramirez). As they prepare to head home, a brief silence settles in after their recent string of arguments.
Feeling the bit of peace in the air, Scott smiles at Alice. She notices for a while, and smiles back, but the moment quickly fades.
Sensing the unease and realizing the two may need a private conversation, Mel volunteers to return to the restaurant to retrieve Seth’s toys.
#4: Scott makes it clear that he will wait for Alice
When Alice finally confesses her trauma to Mel and Beth (Charlie Dizon), Scott is turned away even further, to the point where he is no longer allowed inside Alice’s house. In spite of this, Scott appears one morning to explain to Seth their current situation.
Beth briefly interrupts Scott’s explanation, but he presses on, promising to wait for Alice no matter how long it takes. He also recalls the day they first met, when Alice saved him, and reminds her of what she once said—that the time would come when he would be the one to save her.
#5: Alice and Scott’s love story
The beginning of Alice and Scott’s love story unfolds inside an elevator, where the two become trapped after it malfunctions. Unbeknownst to Scott, his claustrophobia takes over, and despite his efforts to hide it, Alice notices.
Alice hands Scott a pen and teaches him a grounding technique to help calm himself. She then opens up about her own fear of the dark, making Scott feel seen and understood. During their time trapped, the two share a heart-fluttering agreement to meet again once they are rescued.
#6: Alice acknowledges Scott’s waiting
As her once-obscure memories begin to surface, Alice realizes that her trauma is linked to her disappearance at the age of five, rather than to her earlier suspicions that Scott had been abusing her in her sleep.
She calls Scott to emphasize once more that this is something she needs to confront on her own. Scott agrees and reiterates that he will wait for her, even placing his career in the U.S. on hold to support her.
When Alice asks whether his waiting might end in heartbreak, Scott bravely responds that it is something he would inevitably learn to live with.
#7: Alice and Scott finally reconcile
After fully realizing Scott’s innocence, Alice decides to open her heart to him once again. Together, they visit her Uncle Edward (Joel Molina) and Aunt Cristina to see MABEL’s house, which they plan to renovate into a retirement home.
Scott takes the opportunity to assure Edward and Cristina that he will take care of Alice and will soon accompany her to her therapy sessions.
#8: Scott forgives Alice
In one of their conversations after finally agreeing to mend their relationship, Alice admits that Scott’s acceptance of her feels almost too good to be true. Scott acknowledges that he still carries pain from her past words and actions, but he has come to understand that it was never truly about him—Alice was simply struggling on her own.
He then makes further promises to Alice, reminding her of their shared vows, and the two hold each other for comfort.
#9: Alice leans on Scott after her nightmare
Back then, Alice had to grapple with her nightmares and sleepwalking episodes on her own, but now Scott is more than ready to stand by her side. In a recent episode, she shares with him how the sound of glass shattering triggers her trauma, and she apologizes for mistakenly associating him as the cause.
Scott reassures her that she will work through it in time, while Alice mourns the pain her five-year-old self endured.
#10: Scott comforts Alice after the altercation with Anton
In the aftermath of Anton’s (Jameson Blake) attempted murder of Mel, Erica, and Beth, it was Alice who knocked him out by striking his head with a flower vase.
While Mel, Erica, and Beth remained hospitalized, Alice was told to rest at home, where she reflected on her momentary stillness as her friends teetered on the brink of death at Anton’s hands.
She recalls the night Louisa died, when she had also frozen, and blames her past abductor for turning her into a coward. Scott gently disagrees, reminding her that this time, she was the one who saved her friends.
