After piercing our hearts with her emotionally charged tribute to the Filipinos’ so-called “pinsan”, or cousin, Olivia Rodrigo in the previous round of “Your Face Sounds Familiar,” Alexa Ilacad went on to commence the 10th round with her commanding performance of “Girlfriend” by ‘Pop-Punk Royalty’ Avril Lavigne.
A self-confessed fan of the global music icon, it appeared quite easy for Alexa to copy both the voice and onstage mannerisms of Avril, as seen in the clips of her vocal and movement mentoring session with the program’s resident mentors, Klarisse de Guzman and Nyoy Volante.
Her headbanging performance reminded host Vhong Navarro with how the “Gen Z Total Performer” was exactly 10 years ago, so they revisited her “rakista” era by showing one of her throwback photos she had shared on Instagram recently, as almost everyone apparently looked back on their 2016 selves.
Host Jhong Hilario then challenged Alexa to keep the gig feels in the studio through a brief post-performance number, which she enthusiastically accepted by requesting the studio audience to join her as she belted out the Tagalized version of “Girlfriend”.
She may have appeared to be enjoying her tribute for one her music idols—as what juror Gary Valenciano had also observed—but the multifaceted Kapamilya star confessed that she was actually so nervous the night before since she found it hard to copy the voice of Avril. It was noticed by her mom, who advised her to just enjoy it.
Juror Ogie Alcasid, meanwhile, looked back on his unforgettable encounter with Avril more than two decades ago when he attended the MTV Music Awards. He recalled how she allowed him to go first as they lined up for the buffet at the event’s after-party, which prompted him to compare Alexa to her icon since both of them are kindhearted. The OPM chief then advised Alexa that it’s okay to be nervous in every performance since that’s where her adrenaline is coming.
‘The Megastar’ Sharon Cuneta echoed Ogie’s remark by saying how truly important it is for her to enjoy what she’s doing because the audience can sense or feel the energy she gives off. Besides, Sharon also commended her for being so committed to every icon assigned to her, as well as Alexa’s mom for hitting the nail in the head with her advice for her.
