CANDON, Ilocos Sur — Josh Magalaman quickly impressed in his first match as a member of Alas Pilipinas Men, dropping 21 points in their five-set loss against Cambodia in the 2026 SEA V Cup on Wednesday at the Candon City Arena here.

It was a moment for him to seize, said the De La Salle University middle blocker, expressing eagerness to show what he can do for the national team.

His 21-piece though was down the drain, as they ultimately fell short, struggling in the decider despite taking the fourth frame in a heartstopping finish, 23-25, 30-28, 20-25, 25-22, 8-15.

“Gusto ko po ipakita sa buong Pilipinas kung ano po 'yung kaya kong iambag sa team Philippines,” Magalaman said.

“Ako po mismo nagulat ako. Like, paano ko ‘yun nagawa? Tapos, inisip ko na lang, nagagawa ko 'yun kasi 'yun 'yung tine-training namin. 'Yun 'yung tinuturo sa akin ni Coach (Angiolino) Frigoni. Like, bago ako, pero na-adapt ko 'yung sistema niya,” he also said.

The Green Spiker said he’s channeling strength by seeking guidance through his faith.

“Sa loob kasi ng court, parang, siyempre 'yung pressure andy'an. Siyempre, first time ko po maglaro ng Alas. Tapos, inisip ko lang po… lagi ako nagpe-pray. Sabi ko, Lord, give me strength and knowledge para hindi ako mapagod gano’n,” he said.

Regardless, this stint in the Candon-hosted SEA V Cup with Alas Men would boost his confidence.

“Napakalaking experience po 'yung ito, gagamitin ko po to sa mga susunod na liga, (UAAP) Season 89,” he said.

The 23-year-old Alas newcomer hopes the team would lessen the errors as they face Indonesia in a must-win match on Friday.

“Siguro po, as a team, parang, bawas kami po ng error. Kasi, doon po kami natalo. Like, ang daming errors. Tapos, 'yun. Pag nakakapuntos sila at tuloy-tuloy na, di namin ma-stop minsan.”
