MANILA -- The “Lipad Darna” exhibit at Super Manila Comicon gives Filipinos a chance to rediscover one of the country’s most iconic superheroes — and learn lessons that remain relevant today.

“The situation we have right now needs a lot of Darna,” Rex Ravelo, son of comics legend Mars Ravelo explained  in an interview held in Makati City, Saturday.

He added that the Pinoy heroine’s enduring appeal lies not only in her powers, but in her values.

“Especially the sensitive topic of integrity and honesty. That’s the main character of Darna. Integrity, strength, being a Filipino — a real Filipino — honest, na ang iniisip kabutihan ng ibang tao,” he stressed.

The showcase retraces Darna’s 75-year journey, from her comic book debut to her numerous TV and film adaptations. On display are replicas of classic comic panels, costume designs, and memorabilia highlighting the superhero’s many forms through the decades.

“Makikita ng newer generation, it educates ano background ni Darna, para ma-invigorate public — ito pala si Darna, yung pinangalingan niya, inspirations,” Gino dela Cruz, grandson of the late comics legend Mars Ravelo.

“It’s a chance to get to know her from start till now. Seventy-five years old na si Darna. Be proud na sa gitna ng daming produkto galing sa Amerika, we have a Filipina we can be proud of. Baka meron kayo matutunan na bago,” Ravelo added.

To make the experience more interactive, visitors can meet Darna in person—brought to life by popular cosplayer Awie De Guzman wearing the heroine’s classic 1950s look, a nostalgic nod to Rosa del Rosario who first embodied the iconic role on screen.

“Never in my entire cosplay journey did I imagine I’d be Darna. Grabe yung pressure. Sobrang strong ng character and fearless. Nag-internalize pa ako. Hindi ko akalain ma-pull off ko siya,” she said.

Several merchandise items, including stickers, are also available at the booth, which fans can visit during the Super Manila Comicon on Sept. 6–7.
