Whenever we hear the word “forgiveness,” there’s a lot to unpack beneath its usual meaning. It isn’t simply about offering an apology. It’s also about making the choice to heal and accept what has happened—and this is something the cast of the recently concluded action drama “Roja” could relate to when they were asked what forgiveness means to them. In the series, their characters were constantly confronted with betrayal, loss, and painful truths, yet each had to struggle with the question of whether to forgive or to hold on to anger.

For Kyle Echarri (as Olsen), it is more like medicine for yourself than it is for others. “The more you hold on to the grudge, the more you hold on to ‘yung sakit na binigay sa’yo nung taong ‘yun. The more na hindi ka makakabangon, walang magbabago sayo.” he explained. He added that forgiveness is often for your own well-being rather than for the other person, and that moving forward while forgiving yourself can help you carry a lighter, happier heart.

Echoing the same sentiment, Kai Montinola (as Ice) views forgiveness as the ability to let go and accept. She doted that while saying the words “I forgive you” may come easily, the heavy feeling often lingers. “Kaya forgiveness is to let go and accept that the pain has truly hurt you, and it’s time to move on,” she shared.

For Maymay Entrata (as Luna), it is all about acceptance — accepting that the world we live in is far from perfect. “Para makuha natin ‘yung peace, hope, at love every day is to forgive and to accept that everyone is not perfect talaga,” she said. Meanwhile, Kobie Brown (as Macky) sees the act as something that means everything to him. He admitted that he is naturally a forgiving person, “I like to give people second chances. If they break that, I think I might have to cut them off.

AC Bonifacio (as Jules) defines forgiveness as “forgiving yourself for putting yourself into that situation.” She explained that to move forward into the next phase of life, one must first understand what it truly feels like “You can forgive a person without forgetting and just understanding na you experience and you also learn,” AC conveyed. In a similar vein, Emilio Daez (as Bogs) highlighted the importance of acceptance—even of someone who has wronged you. “Accepting the person who has done something to you and moving on from that. Not forgetting, but accepting that it happened and moving on,” he said.

Although reconciliation can be difficult, it remains an act of courage, transforming pain into peace and freeing us from the grip of bitterness. It’s a journey that mirrors what their characters had gone through and experienced in “Roja.”
