During Mel’s (Sue Ramirez) courageous press conference addressing her abusive marriage with Anton (Jameson Blake), Jo and the rest of SINTA arrive to support her, underscoring the victim-blaming often directed at abused women.
The moment gives her the strength she needs, but she is soon overwhelmed again by doubts from those who still question her truth, including Tom (Patrick Ramirez).
When she reveals that she has videos proving Anton’s abuse, Tom’s mood changes, and they discuss her refusal to release the footage, with Mel speaking over Tom and Tim (Dingdong Bahan) as she refuses further humiliation.
More challenges to Mel’s freedom from Anton and the criticism she faces come from her father, Cedric (Franco Laurel), who arrives shortly after the conference and immediately berates her for publicizing her marital issues. In disbelief, Mel confronts Cedric for not even asking how she was after Anton nearly killed her.
Dismissing her need for support once more, Cedric scolds Mel further for embarrassing their family and orders her to drop the charges against Anton, insisting that a simple conversation could resolve everything. Mel contradicts him, emphasizing that a conversation alone won’t stop Anton’s abusive nature, and remains firm in her decision never to go back.
Despite Mel’s refusal and battered condition, Cedric continues to disregard her pain, demanding that she abandon her plans to expose Anton. Fed up with her father’s years of control and indifference, Mel calls him out for caring only about reputation.
She further blames him for shaping her into someone who prioritizes appearance and perfection above anything else. Though she experienced a brief sense of freedom by not pursuing medical school, she still married Anton, creating a seemingly perfect life in an attempt to finally win her father’s approval.
Realizing she had lost a large part of herself catering to her father’s pride, Mel finally decides to take control of her life, firmly declaring that she doesn’t need him. Offended, Cedric slaps her, shocking everyone in the room, while Mel proves that he is just a man who resorts to violence.
After commanding Cedric to leave, Mel is comforted by her mother, Margie (Karen Timbol), who refuses to follow Cedric and stays by her side, revealing she too endured his threats.
The mother and daughter embrace, with Margie asking for forgiveness for not protecting Mel sooner.
Can Mel finally overcome Anton and win her fight for freedom? Find out in “What Lies Beneath,” airing weeknights on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live (KOL), A2Z, ALLTV, and iWant.
