(UPDATED) The Petro Gazz Angels have taken a leave of absence from the Premier Volleyball League, the league confirmed to ABS-CBN News Saturday.

PVL Control Committee chairman Sherwin Malonzo said the team notified the league president, Ricky Palou, on their decision, which is "effective immediately."

"Yes. They notified PVL of their leave of absence," he said in a message.

Malonzo said that all players with existing contracts and those whose contracts just expired will become free agents.

This means Brooke Van Sickle, MJ Phillips, Myla Pablo, and the rest of the championship-winning squad "can sign up with any team."

The development marks the end to Petro Gazz's seven triumphant years, with the team having won last year's All-Filipino and Reinforced Conference -- four PVL titles in total.

In a statement, the team said it came to the decision with a "careful consideration," as it thanked their fans that supported them throughout.

"This decision was made with careful consideration, as volleyball has always been at the core of Petro Gazz's identity. Over the years, the team built a legacy of excellence—winning four PVL championships, developing national team-caliber athletes, and establishing itself as one of the league's pillars," it said.

"Petro Gazz extends its sincere gratitude to its loyal fans, whose unwavering support fueled the team's pursuit of excellence," it added.

Their departure also came after reports surfaced regarding a merger between Petro Gazz and the Nxled Chameleons, which the league rejected.

They will support Nxled, the team also shared, "as a part of their initiative."

"As part of this initiative, Petro Gazz supports the volleyball program of Nxled and other PVL teams by recommending its players, coaches, and staff, guided by its winning culture and core values," it said.
