MANILA -- The Savouge Spin Doctors have made quite the statement in the 2024 Spikers' Turf Invitational Conference, where they have qualified for the semifinals.
Throughout their campaign, the Spin Doctors have stayed true to their principles -- fostering inclusivity in volleyball while promoting a safe space for queer athletes.
The team is composed mostly of members of the LGBTQ, led by Sydney Calderon, a volleyball enthusiast and successful owner of a top aesthetic center.
"I wanted to give LGBTQ+ players the chance they deserve, opportunities often denied by traditional teams," said Calderon, who sees her team as a platform for change.
"I want them to realize that playing with purpose is as important as winning. It’s about breaking stereotypes and proving that their gender identity doesn’t define their skill set," she added.
Savouge has shown in the elimination round that they can keep up with the league's powerhouse clubs as well as overcome adversity.
They opened the conference with four straight wins -- including a five-set triumph over Cignal HD -- before suffering back-to-back defeats. They managed to regroup, however, and still nailed a spot in the semifinals.

"Our defeats opened our minds. We learned from them, and it strengthened our goal to make it to the semis," said Calderon.
Savouge coach Sydney Calderon. PVL MediaThe coach credits her team's camaraderie for their success, with the queer players creating a vibrant and cohesive environment together with their male teammates.
"Their energy is infectious. They make training lively, and that spirit translates into the games," she explained.
As they gear up for the semis, Calderon stresses that the goal for Savouge remains the same -- more than victories, they also want to create a safe space for queer athletes and give them opportunities that they may otherwise be denied.
"Many talented players are overlooked because of their gender identity. I want to change that," she said. Her message to aspiring players is clear: "Be patient and keep playing if volleyball is your passion. Opportunities will come."
