MANILA -- The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) held its first General Assembly under new chairman John Patrick "Pato" Gregorio at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a new leadership era focused on athlete welfare, infrastructure improvement, and grassroots development.
Gregorio officially assumed the chairmanship following the confirmation of his appointment by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on Saturday, June 28. He replaced Richard “Dickie” Bachmann, who previously held the position.
During the assembly, Gregorio laid out key priorities for his administration, including the welfare of athletes, enhancement of sports facilities, and the promotion of a healthy citizenry. He emphasized the importance of well-structured programs, identifying grassroots talent beyond Metro Manila, and ensuring continuity in sports development initiatives.
"First of all, we announced the increase of across-the-board allowance of athletes. Number two, facilities we need to improve right away. Number three, pending loans, uniforms, food, all of that. Immediate, no hanging," Gregorio said.

The PSC also announced that starting August 1, national athletes and coaches will receive a ₱5,000 increase in their monthly allowances.
Among the upcoming initiatives is the upgrading of the cafeteria at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, along with the launch of a 24/7 helpdesk dedicated to athletes and National Sports Associations (NSAs).
Gregorio also aims to bring more international competitions to the country, in a bid to boost sports tourism. He also called for each National Sports Association to organize a national championship.
The PSC is also looking forward to working harmoniously with the Philippine Olympic Committee, headed by Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino. First in their list is the preparation of Filipino athletes for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Thailand this December, where Tolentino says the Philippines will send a big delegation of around 1,600 athletes.
"There are a lot of team events," he explained. "Floorball, futsal, basketball of course, volleyball, hockey, even winter sports."
