MANILA – Hours before the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference championship showdown, finalists Akari Chargers issued a statement decrying the threats toward their players following the dramatic conclusion of their semifinal match against the PLDT High Speed Hitters.
The team said it is taking action to ensure the Chargers' protection while emphasizing that "there is no place for threats and intimidation in the society."
"We, the Akari Chargers, are deeply saddened by the threats directed towards our players and coaching staff following our victory in the PVL 2024 Reinforced Conference Semi-finals. While we understand the passion and emotions that sports can evoke, there is absolutely no place for threats or intimidation in our spirits or in society," it said.

"The safety and well-being of our athletes, coaches, and their families are our top priorities. We are coordinating with the proper authorities and taking immediate action to ensure their protection," it added.
The semifinal result turned eyes when Akari's Ezra Madrigal made contact with the net at the 14-13 count in Set 5, to which PLDT challenged for a net fault mid-rally but was unsuccessful, with officials saying it was legal as the play was away from her.
The referees gave a point to Akari as the challenge was raised during a rally.
Commissioner Sherwin Malonzo cited section 11.3.2 of the FIVB rulebook, saying "Players may touch the post, ropes, or any other object outside the antennae, including the net itself, provided that it does not interfere with the play."

PVL later upheld the referee's decision regarding the call after a PLDT protest.
The Chargers remain resolute on finishing strong in the Reinforced tilt.
"Despite these challenges, we remain resolute. Our team's commitment and determination have been unwavering throughout our difficult journey to the finals, and we will not be intimidated. We will continue to compete today with the same grit and passion that has defined our season."
To conclude its statement, Akari went on to thank its fans.
"Thank you to our supporters for standing by us and for your unwavering support."
The Chargers are set to take on the Creamline Cool Smashers in the final of the Reinforced Conference on Wednesday night.
