MANILA — Tropical storm Maymay weakened into a tropical depression Thursday morning, according to PAGASA.
It now has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour with gustiness up to 90 kph. It is moving eastward slowly.
At 4 a.m., Maymay was in the vicinity of Tanudan, Kalinga.
All tropical cyclone wind signal no. 2 has been lifted but wind signal no. 1 remains in effect over:
• Ilocos Norte
• Ilocos Sur
• La Union
• northwestern Pangasinan
• Abra
• Apayao
• Kalinga
• Mountain Province
• Ifugao
• Benguet
• mainland Cagayan including southern Babuyan Islands
• Isabela
• Nueva Vizcaya
• Quirino
• northern and central Aurora.
Strong winds will continue to affect these areas, with minor to minimal impacts expected.
Aside from strong winds, Maymay will also continue to bring significant rainfall in Northern and Central Luzon Thursday.
Heavy to intense rainfall (100-200 millimeters)
• Ilocos Sur
• La Union
• Pangasinan
• Benguet
Moderate to heavy rainfall (50-100 mm)
• Ilocos Norte
• Abra
• Apayao
• Kalinga
• Mountain Province
• Ifugao
• Nueva Vizcaya
• Nueva Ecija
• Tarlac
• Zambales
• Bataan
• Pampanga
• Bulacan
The risk of flooding and landslides remains high in many areas, especially given the amount of prior rainfall in some localities.
Maymay will cross the rest of Northern Luzon eastward and may be downgraded into a low pressure area once it emerges over the Philippine Sea. It will eventually merge with the broad circulation of Typhoon Dolphin.
PAGASA said it is not ruling out Maymay’s much earlier weakening due to its interaction with the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon or Habagat prevails over Metro Manila, Southern Luzon, and Western Visayas, with moderate to heavy rains expected in many areas.
Once Maymay dissipates, Dolphin-enhanced Habagat will dominate Luzon and Visayas.
Significant rains may be expected over the western portions of Luzon and Panay through the weekend.

Outside the Philippine area of responsibility, Typhoon Dolphin was located 1,325 kilometers east northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon at 10 a.m.
It has maximum sustained winds of 150 kph with gustiness up to 185 kph and is moving west at 15 kph.
It is less likely to enter the PAR but will pass north of the country as it heads towards eastern China.
Despite the typhoon’s large wind field, raising of wind signals over Extreme Northern Luzon is less likely, according to PAGASA.
The public is advised to continue monitoring updates on the weather and take the necessary preparations.
