MANILA — Google announced a new account recovery feature that allows users to regain access to their accounts using short video recordings of their faces.

The new feature, called "selfie video," is designed to assist users when they are locked out or lack access to their primary devices. Setting up the feature requires users to record a brief video following guided head movements to capture their face from multiple angles.

"Selfie video gives people more options to access their accounts, especially if they are ever locked out or don't have access to their primary phone or computer," the tech giant said in a statement.

To regain access, users record a fresh video that is compared against their initial setup. Google stated that the system employs anti-impersonation safeguards, including checks against deepfakes, live movement verification, and encryption of stored video data.

"Their selfie video is theirs and they’re in control. It is recorded and securely stored with their consent, and they can delete it at any time in their Google Account," the company added.

The rollout builds on the company's broader push toward passwordless authentication, following its recent implementation of passkeys and backup recovery contacts.
