What was supposed to be a sweet and joyous celebration for Sam’s (Julia Montes) achievement as the leader of the NCIA team that brought notorious gold-smuggling syndicate leader Victor (JM de Guzman) to justice eventually turned into a heated family confrontation.
While her doting mother, Isobel (Carmi Martin), along with their house helpers Twinkle (Tess Antonio) and Toto (Nonong Ballinan), were thrilled by her latest accomplishment and even prepared a cake to celebrate with her, it was clearly a different story for her father, Ricardo (Edu Manzano), and her sister, Max (Arci Muñoz), who were both disappointed with her.
Instead of congratulating her, Ricardo warned Sam to be cautious about going against the syndicate, reminding her that she and the NCIA might not know who they were dealing with. He also questioned whether their investigation was accurate, suggesting that Victor could have been wrongly accused and merely caught in the middle of the chaos. This prompted Sam to recount what happened during the operation.
Ricardo further pointed out that the Zafras were legitimate businesspeople and suggested that the NCIA may have arrested the wrong person since they failed to recover any evidence of contraband. Sam argued that this was impossible, as Victor already had an existing murder case and had been proven to be the leader of the syndicate.
When Sam accused him of appearing to defend Victor, Ricardo denied it and explained that he was only questioning the actions she and the NCIA took in handling the case. Sam maintained that their operation was completely legitimate and carefully planned, insisting that she had simply done her duty and handled the case in the way she believed was right. As she confronted Ricardo if he would criticize her actions and consider them wrong in his eyes once more, Max stepped in and told her to listen to their father instead of insisting that she was always right.
Ricardo then asked Max to talk some sense into her younger sister, who had already walked out of the room. Isobel, however, scolded him for once again allowing his instincts as a former general to prevail instead of being a father first to their child.
Following their father’s request, Max confronted Sam about what had happened and warned her not to disrespect Ricardo again, especially in front of her. Sam explained that she was only defending herself and her actions, but Max argued that their father might have noticed something they had overlooked, considering that they were still new to law enforcement while Ricardo had years of experience as a former chief of police.
As Sam questioned whether it was wrong for her to defend herself and successfully solve the case assigned to her, Max brought up the NCIA’s lack of coordination after taking over Victor’s case from the NLEA. Sam insisted that it was not their agency’s fault that they managed to beat the NLEA in apprehending the notorious criminal, which clearly angered Max.
Max then reminded Sam that her stubbornness was the reason their family had fallen apart. Her words deeply hurt Sam, leaving her in tears as she looked at the photograph of their late brother after Max stormed out of her room.
