Living in the limelight seemed as though it had always been the most important part of becoming Mel Barrera-Montenegro (Sue Ramirez), but once the long-buried truths slowly surfaced in “What Lies Beneath,” beyond her glamorous reputation, she’s simply a person seeking freedom from the bonds that have bound her for many years.
How she came to achieve her own triumph is truly inspirational, even more so after sitting through her rough beginnings.
Mel spent her youth seeking unconditional love
At an early age, Mel was already compelled to chase down a life of perfection as defined by society and, in particular, by her strict father, Cedric (Franco Laurel). She found strength when she bravely fought against Cedric’s suffocating ideals and pursued her dream to be a fashion stylist.
However, her father remained indifferent to her genuine happiness, even as she shared hearty laughter and connection with her newfound friends at the time, the young MABEL girls—Alice (Eliza Borromeo), Beth (Allyson McBride), Erica (Krystal Mejes), and Louisa (Mutya Orquia).
During the time of Louisa’s murder, in which she and her friends were called as witnesses, she never received moral support from both her parents. While her mother kept silent, Cedric had harshly described her as a disappointment upon thinking that the case started causing shame to the Barrera family.
Young Mel eventually surrendered to the mental pressures of her father as well as the rest of Amurao in falsely naming young Edong (Renshi de Guzman) as Louisa’s killer.
Mel formed a bittersweet friendship with MABEL
Mel, Alice, Beth, Erica, and Louisa weren’t exactly the best of friends the first time they met each other, as they were caught up in the complexities of their respective lives. Unexpectedly, Mel grew closer to the girls throughout the ordeal with Kyle (Kobie Brown), who was her suitor that sexually harassed Louisa.
Believing Louisa’s story, Mel also sided with her but was reduced to silence by her father during the principal’s meeting over Kyle’s accident when he attempted to hurt Louisa again on the campus. Soon after failing to defend themselves, she and the girls took revenge on Kyle publicly, with Kyle leaving them a haunting threat.
Since then, Mel has formed a tight-knit friendship with the rest of MABEL, as if they would be inseparable for a lifetime. Until Louisa’s unforeseen death and Edong’s unjust imprisonment took place, causing them to fall apart. Mel concurred with Beth and Alice’s statements, deciding that Edong was Louisa’s murderer, and Erica left Amurao, plagued by their decision.
Mel endured years of abuse from Anton
Fourteen years later, Mel appeared hugely successful in her career as a celebrity stylist while also simultaneously being the wife of the famous TV personality and political heir Anton Montenegro (Jameson Blake). Dubbed as the golden couple, the two were perceived by fans as ideal partners for each other, not knowing the cruelty that Mel constantly dealt with behind closed doors.
Throughout Mel’s marriage with Anton, she would often be the center of controversies that framed her as an abusive wife. In truth, Anton was the mastermind of damaging Mel’s hard-earned reputation, as he found it unbearable to see Mel striving on her own or even as she merely socializes with others.
Most people would often doubt Mel’s identity whenever new rumors would emerge, including Tim (Dingdong Bahan), Tom (Patrick Ramirez), and Beth (Charlie Dizon). Mel then supported herself alone during her dream runway show with Grace & Glam, when Anton had punched her before she went on stage.
Mel built a comforting romance with Lucas
In the past, young Mel actually had romantic feelings for the young Lucas (Andrez del Rosario) at the same period when he was dating young Erica. Forgetting her affection for Erica, the exact emotions resurfaced when they met each other again at a night party.
Back then, Lucas refused Mel’s intention to revive the connection between them, but when he had witnessed Anton’s abuse toward Mel, he came to her aid as a beacon of hope and love that she had been searching for all her life. Unbeknownst to Mel, Lucas purposely got closer to her just to acquire her confession about being involved in Edong’s unjust imprisonment years ago.
Mel went on fighting for her broken relationship with Lucas, even as he admitted the truth. But upon striking up an intense conversation with Erica, whom she believed played a part in Lucas’ distance, she learned she must put herself first above anything else.
Mel bravely revealed the truth about Anton’s abuse
Over the course of Mel taking Jo’s recommendation to approach SINTA for her domestic abuse case and her gradual visits to a marriage lawyer, Edong managed to discover an old photo of Mel and Lucas kissing and anonymously delivered it to Anton.
In a fit of rage, Anton went after Mel at Vangie’s (Rubi Rubi) cafe and had brutally beaten her alongside Beth and Erica (Kaila Estrada). Following Alice (Janella Salvador) rendering Anton unconscious, the legal battle between Mel and Anton ensued, with Erica representing her.
The news of their altercation spread nationally, and Anton would shamelessly put on his pitiful facade, attempting to manipulate the public to believe he is the victim of Mel and her friends. Mel then held a press conference, retelling Anton’s abuse of her, with SINTA empowering her further.
Mel finally revolted against her father’s control
It took a while for Mel to gain the support of the majority, including her past house helpers, Tom (Patrick Ramirez), and her father, Cedric, who had stormed in after her press conference. Fuming, Cedric berated Mel for exposing her abusive marriage, more worried about staining his reputation than Mel’s safety.
Even the brands she had worked with pulled out her ambassadorship amid the case with Anton, but Mel decided to fight back against her father’s dominance. She had brought up memories of Cedric failing to act as a parent and the instances when he had compelled her into a lifelong obsession with perfection.
In the process of Mel freeing herself by ordering Cedric to depart from her life permanently, she also liberated her mother, Margie (Karen Timbol), who has been under his command as well.
Mel emotionally publicized videos of Anton’s abuse
Just as things seemed to have settled down, Anton suddenly orchestrated a deepfake video scandal that used Mel’s identity, which worsened her trauma. Initially hesitant about uploading the videos, as it would feel as if she were reliving the abuse again.
Mel made the choice, hoping that it would free her from remaining misery. Following this, an enraged Anton rushed to find Mel at Alice’s home but was abducted and killed by the vengeful Edong (Jake Cuenca).
When the news of Anton’s death reached Mel, conflicted feelings emerged, particularly her guilt of feeling relieved by it.
Mel presently lives a love-filled life
Midway through the mystery of Althea’s (Andi Abaya) real attacker, Mel, alongside Beth and Alice, teamed up to investigate the matter, which eventually led them to save Alice from a murderous Edward, who was the person responsible for Althea’s critical condition, Alice’s trauma, and Louisa’s murder.
In the present day, Mel now owns a company with Tim (Dingdong Bahan) and Tom remaining by her side. An abundance of brand partnerships was also offered to her, but she prioritizes herself and her closest friends more.
SINTA also became an irreplaceable part of her advocacy for a lifetime, wherein she will be organizing a fashion show featuring and empowering domestic abuse survivors.
Mel’s heavy-hearted narrative undoubtedly touched the lives of viewers, especially of women who continue to face the same generational oppression and day by day are working tirelessly to liberate themselves.
