It’s nothing new for Jason Dy to transform into his icon Benson Boone (which he “stole” from Akira Morishita last week), as he had already copied the “Beautiful Things” hitmaker’s look for a Halloween party before. But this time, he also had to imitate Boone’s voice on “Your Face Sounds Familiar.”
During the mentoring session, Klarisse De Guzman taught him Benson’s vocal style and his trademark slightly squeezed growl. It was a double challenge because aside from the vocal gymnastics, Benson is also very exhibitionist when performing, which Jason must execute to fully embody the icon’s persona.
After the song, Jason admitted that this was probably the most vocally demanding performance he has done on the show, to which judge Gary Valenciano agreed, saying, “Narinig ko ‘yung challenge sa boses mo.” But that struggle was made up for by the 'character' that he embodied.
For Sharon Cuneta, Jason once again proved that there is nothing he cannot do beautifully. Judge Ogie Alcasid, meanwhile, said he already knew the Prince of Soul would bring out some “magic” onstage because he wouldn’t steal an icon from a co-performer if he knew he couldn’t pull it off—and the grit and passion he showed were exactly the magic Ogie saw.
“That was very hard to do and you did it with flying colors,” Ogie commented.
