The set of “Sins of the Father” is filled with fun bonding moments, as cast members Leigh Ang, Reign Parani, and Junjun Quintana shared when they dropped by Kapamilya Chat.
Yet behind the warmth and ‘kulitan’ is a deep commitment to the series, which makes the trio grateful to be part of a story that tackles hard-hitting issues like scams, human trafficking, and fraud. As Junjun reflected, "Each time we watch the show, it's like we're being reminded that we have to act in line with our goals such as in being a good person, a responsible citizen of this country, and a dedicated public servant."
The cast takes pride in their teleserye, which they described as both truthful and a wake-up call, not only for victims but also for those who commit the crimes. It’s the kind of story that resonates with audiences because that is what entertainment should ultimately do–not just entertain, but also connect. “May matututunan tayo bilang mga Pilipino na huwag nating pagsamantalahan ang bawat isa lalo na sa maling paraan," mused Junjun.
For actors like them, nothing is more fulfilling than portraying roles that leave a meaningful impact on viewers. Reign steps into the shoes of Diane, a dutiful daughter determined to help her mother rise above debt. But in her desperation to help, Diane may unknowingly make choices that could put her in danger. Though the character may initially seem timid, Reign is confident that audiences will eventually see Diane’s strength and goodness, and carry valuable lessons from her journey. If she could send a message to her on-screen persona, Reign would tell her, "It did not start so well but I hope you could find your way back and make sure you're still proud of yourself."
Leigh, on the other hand, is amused by how viewers are having fun with her character Abby, whose ‘taray’ scenes have sparked so much reaction that netizens are already making memes about her. On the surface, Abby appears to be recruiting young women for modeling or acting jobs, but she clearly has something up her sleeve. Leigh hopes her character eventually becomes wiser in the decisions she makes.
As for Junjun, he looks forward to how his own character’s story will unfold. He plays a computer software expert who falls victim to a scam and is later kidnapped, setting the stage for a gripping arc that audiences will surely watch out for. If there’s one lesson people could take from his character’s journey, Junjun believes it is the reminder that no one can truly get away with taking advantage of others, that everything you do eventually comes back to you. Still, he remains hopeful that his character’s path will lead to a meaningful resolution.
Scams, as the cast pointed out, can creep into even the most ordinary situations. Reign cited the familiar case of “expectation versus reality” when ordering items online, like the time she thought she was buying a vanity mirror, only to receive a tiny compact mirror instead. It was a small mishap, but one that showed just how easy it is to be misled if you don’t take the time to research or read carefully. Junjun built on that thought by pointing out how even as ordinary as settling online payments can be risky, thus the importance of verifying account details and identities of the people you transact with to avoid being tricked.
Leigh also shared a more personal account involving their family’s former house helper, who nearly became a victim of a love scam. The helper believed she had a foreign suitor who promised to send her a package, but the catch was that she needed to send him money first to claim it. Fortunately, Leigh learned about the situation in time and was able to warn her before she lost anything.
From there, the cast shared a few words of advice for viewers. Reign reminded everyone to always protect themselves and what they have, especially in how they move online, since fraud has become so rampant in the digital space. Many people have already fallen victim, which, as Leigh pointed out, is one reason “Sins of the Father” resonates so strongly with audiences. The show reflects real-life experiences and, at the same time, teaches viewers to be more alert and vigilant when dealing with others. "Wala na ngayon 'yan sa hitsura ng tao," she said. "Napakadaling magdamit nang maganda, branded, mahal na gamit at alahas, pero hindi mo alam na 'yun ang front niya para madali kayong ma-convince."
Junjun echoed this with a straightforward reminder that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. “People think there’s a shortcut to success, but we need to accept that there isn’t,” he explained. "Huwag po nating kagatin kung alam natin na hindi kapani-paniwala," he explained.
Leigh added that the only real way to succeed is to build from the ground up, because while cheating your way through might give temporary results, the backlash will always catch up with you in the end.
