“What Lies Beneath” is proving to be a complete treat for mystery and suspense fans, with each episode cut just right to spark genuine anticipation. The show truthfully masters its familiar-yet-unique storytelling, luring viewers into one hunch, then flipping it in the most surprising way.

The truth about Mel’s controversies
Talk about clever framing and suspicious acting when it’s Mel’s (Sue Ramirez) time on screen. After displaying her compliance with the lies set in motion by young Beth (Allyson McBride), which imprisoned the young Edong (Renshi de Guzman) for Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia) death, doubts are carefully left for viewers to unravel later—but she certainly made a mark with her piercing statement of betrayal directed at young Erica (Krystal Mejes).
The doubts about her character resurface fourteen years later, when a controversy erupts over her being an abusive wife to the popular heartthrob and influential political scion, Anton (James Blake).
During the first few episodes of the series, we often see Anton’s gentle and patient demeanor toward her, much like his fans within the narrative—but we are soon left aghast when we learn why Mel gave him a black eye: he had been abusing her in multiple ways for years, and the strike was a rare act of self-defense.
Edong’s tumultuous journey and the twists of Bagumbayan
If there’s one character we can embrace as someone who understands him, it’s Edong (Jake Cuenca). Over the years, he went through many traumatic and life-changing events, which eventually turned him into a man full of vengeance.
Throughout the introductory episodes, Edong is presented to viewers as a troubled teenager, but as more of his personal story unfolds, hearts ache at his beginnings. Like any son, Edong loved his mother and little brother so deeply that he would always put himself at risk to protect them from their abusive father.
It becomes even harder to watch as more tragedies strike his innocent life—particularly when his father returns home and kills his and young Lucas’ (Andrez del Rosario) mother. This pushes him onto a destructive path of illegal dealings with drugs, earning the ire of the entire town of Amurao, including Celestino (Bart Guingona) and MABEL (Mel, Alice, Beth, Erica, and Louisa).
Because he was an easy target for frame-ups due to his recent outbursts and physical altercations—particularly involving the MABEL girls—Celestino seizes every chance to trap Edong in a cage he can never escape. Celestino was also fueled by his fury over the belief that his son’s drug addiction is somehow connected to Edong.
After manipulated interrogations, false testimonies, and fabricated evidence, Edong is unfairly imprisoned. The twists inside Bagumbayan grow even more wicked as he slowly loses his will to live under constant abuse—until one moment when he finally snaps at his sexual abuser, earning him a feared and influential position inside.
Fourteen years later, Edong appears to viewers as someone who seems to have turned his life around, even earning a saint-like reputation for keeping peace and attending Bible sessions. In reality, he follows orders to beat disobedient inmates and carries out illegal deliveries for the wardens—privileges that allow him to step outside, eventually leading to his escape.
Esther’s fall from grace
One of the most stressful moments of the series was the severed hand—initially mistaken for a bomb by Erica (Kaila Estrada).
Edong had it discreetly delivered to the seemingly invincible attorney on the same day he made a cryptic call—one that shifted panic from a bomb scare to frantic assumptions about Mel’s death, as many initially believed the hand was hers. A few episodes later, Mel resurfaces alive, though only after enduring a high-tension escape from Anton.
Adding to the shock factor, episode 31 finally reveals that Esther (Malou Crisologo) was the true owner of the hand—the devout believer who falsely accused Edong of Louisa’s death. Edong made the gory decision to mirror Esther’s repeated sins of embezzlement and her role in taking away the last bits of hope in his life.
Lucas’ shortcut to success and his ties to Mel
In a tearful last call with Edong—who was shot and pursued by the NLEA police force—Lucas (JM de Guzman) discloses that what Edong and the viewers had believed to be his true rags-to-riches story was actually a shortcut that betrayed Edong’s trust, as Lucas had connected himself to notorious businessmen like the Kyos.
Heartbreakingly, Edong cries out that it was supposed to be only him who ended up in such deep and dark circumstances—not his little brother.
On top of that, Lucas also deceived the vulnerable and love-struck Mel—making her believe he truly loved her, when in reality, he was only manipulating her to extract the truth about Edong’s imprisonment years earlier, particularly concerning the false evidence against him.
Liezel and Angelo’s past connection with Louisa
The hair-raising revelation in the series centers on Liezel (Mary Joy Apostol) and Angelo’s (Marlo Mortel) past connections with the late Louisa. Prompted by Beth, her conversation with Amurao’s well-known gossiper, Vangie, uncovers Louisa’s friendship with Liezel and hints at a suspected affair with Angelo.
The distrust toward the couple is actually understandable. In previous episodes, Liezel was seen showing visible discomfort whenever Louisa and Edong were mentioned.
With Angelo’s introduction, more Easter eggs resurface—particularly his tattoo. Remember, Erica once thought she saw a birthmark on the back of Louisa’s killer.
Also, in a brief, blurry scene from the earliest episodes, two people appear, with one striking Louisa on the back of her head. Could they be the same pair?
