Coming from her beauty queen persona, Dia Mate transformed into a global pop sensation in Round 4 of “Your Face Sounds Familiar" as she prepared to impersonate Billie Eilish, a challenge she was so thrilled about since Billie is one of her all-time favorites.
Unlike her previous performances that demanded vocal intensity, Dia had to hold back this week, with vocal mentor Klarisse de Guzman guiding her to keep the tone chill rather than powerful. Nyoy Volante echoed the same point in terms of movement, reminding her to control her instinct to move too much, which was especially challenging since Dia is naturally expressive and full of energy.
And Dia delivered a chill, composed performance of “Birds of a Feather,” with judge Ogie Alcasid saying he could feel her excitement at portraying one of her idols and thought she did so well, while Sharon Cuneta acknowledged that although she didn’t perfect every part, there were moments where she captured the icon’s voice exactly. Klarisse added that it’s normal to have a little room for imperfections in transformations like this, but overall it was a strong improvement from Dia compared to her past performances.
