The October 28 episode of “What Lies Beneath” starts off with Edong (Jake Cuenca) leading the prison’s Bible study with the full attention of his fellow inmates. His redemption from his destructive and anger-ridden past was pointed out by the pastor throughout the sermon that revolved around forgiving others as well as oneself.
Lucas (JM de Guzman), on the other hand, is seen punching an unnamed man. Despite having bruised knuckles, he shows up to the opening of his gym in Amurao with ease.
The crumbling of Alice’s marriage confuses her mom
Following her apparent panic upon seeing a car parked outside her home and her subsequent purchase of multiple CCTVs, Alice’s (Janelle Salvador) growing fear of Scott’s (Mark Neumann) potential pursuit of their son resurfaces as she locks all of the windows and doors in the house.
A troubled Mrs. Quintana (Carlene Aquilar) contacts Alice, questioning more of her daughter’s sudden trip back to the Philippines without communicating with Scott, who’s on a business trip.
At first looking upon Alice’s marriage as if it were flawless, Mrs. Quintana has since become perplexed about the sudden adverse change. Despite her careful and desperate attempts to advise her daughter, an unyielding Alice keeps bringing up divorce.
Erica grows suspicious of the Santiago brothers after Celestino’s tragic end
In what appears to be a brief affair, Erica (Kaila Estrada) wakes up with the unidentified man from the bar. She learns of Celestino’s death through a text message from Marco (Race Matias).
Forming possible suspects in her head, Erica calls Marco, expressing her suspicions of the Santiago brothers, Lucas (JM de Guzman) and Edong (Jake Cuenca). With not much evidence of Lucas’ involvement and Edong’s ongoing incarceration, Marco is uncertain about Erica’s speculations.
She thinks back on the events in rapid succession, beginning with Edong’s cryptic phone call, Esther Castro’s (Malou Crisologo) disappearance, and Celestino’s (Bart Guingona) unexpected demise.
If Edong is still inside the prison, she also surmises that someone might be working for him and the possibility of an enraged Lucas seeking revenge for his brother after 14 years.
In their ongoing search for Louisa’s (Mutya Orquia) real killer, Marco now gets in touch with a police officer to acquire further information about Celestino.
Beth’s debt issues resurface, Marie brings in a new love interest
Beth’s (Charlie Dizon) mother-in-law, Cecilia, complains about her recent insinuation of Vivian’s debt inside the teacher’s office despite having similar issues with debt. When Beth explains tactfully that the debt was used to pay for her father-in-law’s cancer treatment, Cecilia chastises her for bringing it up.
To prevent things from getting heated, Ryan (Yves Flores) casually brings up Beth’s tendency to talk too much, and their daughter Chloe (Jewel Milag) joins in.
The quips and disputes stop when Beth’s mother, Marie (Jenny Miller), and her younger lover arrive at the house.
After warning her mother that her new partner might be exploiting her financially, Beth goes on to remind her of all the failed relationships she has had in the past. Among them are the boyfriend she brought to Beth’s school, the man she was a mistress of, and the abusive lover she had during the time of Beth’s scholarship offer from a Manila-based university.
Marie genuinely tells Beth that she’s fortunate to have Ryan as a husband, and Beth acknowledges this even though they experienced the hardships of early parenthood. Marie also remarks that Beth and Ryan’s marriage is happier than Mel’s, who is currently embroiled in a domestic abuse scandal with her husband Anton Montenegro (Jameson Blake).
Mel conceals the marks Anton’s abuse left on her
In the middle of her preparation, Mel calls Beth to convince her to come to the opening of Lucas’ Fitness Plus in Amurao. Beth agrees after a brief moment of convincing, reminding Mel that she won't be at the event for long.
After the call, Mel’s smile fades as she notices the bruise on her forearm, a reminder of Anton’s aggression on the day she tried to end their marriage. She covers a big bruise on her neck with concealing makeup, wincing as she does so.
With tears barely contained, Mel stares at herself in the mirror as she finishes getting ready.
