“Shinota mo ang best friend mo!”
These were the words expressed by Mae (Kim Chiu) in the 2010 Star Cinema romance drama film Paano Na Kaya, directed by Ruel S. Bayani.
The story follows Mae, a young shirt designer who quietly carries a long-standing love for her best friend Bogs (Gerald Anderson). While Mae keeps her feelings hidden, Bogs is focused on building his dream of owning a car repair shop despite lacking support from his family and remaining deeply involved with his girlfriend Anna (Melissa Ricks).
Throughout the story, Mae’s affection surfaces not through grand declarations but through small gestures and unwavering presence for Bogs, supporting him while keeping her emotions concealed, fearing that honesty might destroy the friendship she values most.

Bogs, unaware of Mae’s feelings, stays committed to Anna, a career-driven woman whose priorities eventually pull her away from him. On the eve of their anniversary, Anna ends their relationship after confessing her feelings for her boss Julius (Bernard Palanca), believing he possesses clearer ambitions and direction in life. The breakup leaves Bogs devastated and uncertain about himself.
In the middle of his heartbreak, Mae naturally becomes his source of comfort. Their bond grows stronger through shared moments and conversations, especially since both have problems with their families.
Encouraged by Mae’s steady support, Bogs secures a loan and opens his own car repair shop, a turning point that marks his personal growth. Eventually, Mae gathers the courage to confess her feelings, leading to a best friends to lovers' trope. However, uncertainty lingers beneath the surface as both wonder whether love truly grew between them or if Bogs simply sought refuge after losing Anna.

Anna reenters Bogs’ life just as Mae becomes occupied managing her family’s business. While Mae juggles responsibilities, Bogs reconnects with his former girlfriend. Their growing closeness becomes increasingly difficult to ignore, yet Mae chooses silence, holding on to trust and to the love she has long protected.
The emotional breaking point comes when Anna, after separating from Julius, returns to Bogs and kisses him, with Mae witnessing the moment herself.
Heartbroken and cornered by painful truths, she finally confronts Bogs. She questions whether he ever genuinely loved her or merely tried to love the friend who had always stayed beside him. She asks why he risked transforming their cherished friendship into romance if his heart still belonged elsewhere.
At the height of that confrontation comes the line: “Shinota mo ang best friend mo!” after Mae painfully explains that she would have understood if Bogs had simply looked away when she revealed her feelings. For her, rejection would have hurt less than being loved halfway. Instead of protecting their friendship, he chose to make her his girlfriend despite not fully letting go of his past, only to set her aside when Anna returned.
Kim’s portrayal of Mae’s emotions reflected confusion, disappointment, and quiet anger born from loving too much and asking too little in return. Through the character of Mae, Kim conveyed the vulnerability of people who become emotional anchors for someone they love, hoping loyalty might eventually become enough reason to be chosen.
The line became shorthand for a universal fear of risking friendship for love and discovering that feelings are not always equal. It also reflected one of the film’s strongest themes, showing the complicated space between friendship and romance. Paano Na Kaya explored how affection, timing, and emotional readiness do not always align, and how love can become painful when entered without certainty.

Kim’s performance gave voice to people who have experienced unrequited love, emotional compromise, or the heartbreak of realizing they were present but never fully chosen.
The emotional impact of the scene was strengthened further by the popularity of Kim and Gerald’s loveteam at the time, famously called as “KimErald.”
After meeting through Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition in 2006, where Kim emerged as Big Winner and Gerald finished as third big placer, the pair became one of Philippine entertainment’s most celebrated screen tandems. Their chemistry eventually blossomed into a real-life relationship and drew fans to projects such as First Day High, I've Fallen For You, Sana Maulit Muli, Tayong Dalawa, and more, before their breakup in 2010.
Despite ending their romance off-screen, both remained committed to their careers and continued working together in projects such as 24/7 In Love and Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin, among others.
