Kapamilya stars Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino, collectively known as KimPau, opened up about portraying more mature, character-driven roles in their newest project, The Alibi.
During the media conference for the series, Kim and Paulo shared how their experiences and growth as artists helped them approach the story with depth, professionalism, and mutual respect.
For Kim, stepping into her 30s marks a new chapter in her career that allows her to embrace boldness and authenticity both on and off screen.
“As a 35-year-old woman, tapos na tayo sa 16 years old na teeny-teeny, pero favorite ko yun,” she expressed. “Kapag tinatrack ko yung journey ko rito sa industriya ko, parang nahati ko naman siya sa teens, 20s and then 30s so sabi ko, ‘Ano ipapakita ko sa aking 30s? I think it’s my skin."
Kim shared that taking on The Alibi was a challenge she willingly accepted as part of her artistic growth and a way to prove her versatility as an actress.
“Medyo mahirap na gawin. Pero gusto ko lang magpakita ng bago. Sa mga nagsasabi na hindi ako marunong sa ganitong klaseng role, ito na iyon. I want to prove all of them wrong and that I can do more than what they know,” she stated.
Kim added, “More than the skin, it’s what’s inside and what I want to show to all my supporters.”
Paulo echoed Kim’s sentiments, emphasizing that The Alibi is more than just its mature themes. It is also about emotional truth and the depth of the characters.
“I don't think it is about skin, but it comes with the maturity of the role and what the role requires. So, minsan may mga character and mga istorya na gustong ikuwento at sa mga ganitong paraan siya naipapakita,” Paulo explained.
“It also comes with the maturity of the actress. Very character driven po ito and we want to be very loyal with the character,” he added.
He also acknowledged that filming certain delicate scenes required trust and sensitivity toward his co-stars which he handled with extra care.
“Maraming ilangan moments, kasi you enter the set as professional actors and you have scenes na medyo delicate, so lagi mo iniisip ‘yung co-actress and actors mo,” Paulo admitted.
“Naiilang ka rin and natatakot ka para sa eksena mo or sa sarili mo or natatakot ka rin if nasasaktan mo sila dahil sa instructions from the directors and the script. Doon ‘yung kinakatakot ko at doon lagi ako naiilang na along the way sa proseso ko or sa pag-arte ko na nasasktan ko or na-alienate ko ba or maybe nararamdaman ba ng ka-eksena ko na nababastos ko sila in some way, so as much as possible I try my best to talk to them first or to show them what I’m gonna do,” Paulo continued.
Kim agreed, noting that despite this being their fourth collaboration, every project with Paulo brings a new kind of challenge.
“Kahit kami ni Pau na pang-apat na project na namin, iba-iba rin kasi ginagawa namin, iba-iba ring intensity, so parang nakakahiya, nakakailang. Pero since professional kami pareho, so ayon. Maraming characters na pwede i-play and it's up to you kung paano mo siya gampanin and depende sa pagkakasulat and pagkakagawa,” she expressed.
The actress also expressed appreciation for Paulo’s consistent respect and professionalism on set.
