South Korean actor Hyun Bin recently offered a rare glimpse into the story behind his romance with his wife, Son Ye-jin, describing how their connection unfolded quietly after starring in their hit 2019 Korean drama series Crash Landing on You.

On December 21, the YouTube web variety show “Fairy Jae-hyung” released an episode titled, “I think I fell in love as if my clothes got soaked... (sincerely),” where Hyun Bin sat down for an open conversation with host Jung Jae-hyung. During the discussion, Jae-hyung reflected on the couple’s chemistry in Crash Landing on You. “I’ve mentioned this to Ye-jin as well, but I think your relationship started during Crash Landing on You,” he told Hyun Bin, as translated by South Korean local news outlets.

“Both of you delivered such heartfelt performances. At the time, I thought, ‘This is love. You can’t act like that unless it’s real love.’” he shared.

Hyun Bin was quick to clarify the timeline. “No, that’s not true,” he said firmly, before explaining, “It was after Crash Landing on You ended.”

Hyun Bin and Ye-jin first worked together in the 2018 film The Negotiation, before reuniting years later as on-screen partners in the hit tvN drama Crash Landing on You. Their professional partnership eventually turned into a real-life relationship, leading to their marriage in March 2022 in a private outdoor wedding ceremony at the Aston House of Sheraton's Grand Walkerhill in Seoul.

The couple welcomed their first born in November the same year. Today, their son is already three years old.

Recounting their first collaboration, Hyun Bin explained that their interactions during The Negotiation were limited.

“We worked together on the film The Negotiation. At that time, we barely filmed together. Although we shot on the same days, we were in different locations. Aside from running into each other during meals or while monitoring, there wasn’t much interaction,” he shared.

He admitted that, as an actor, the setup left him wanting more, adding, “As an actor, I felt that was a bit disappointing. I vaguely hoped we’d meet again in a different genre, and that ended up being Crash Landing on You.”

When they finally reunited for the drama, their connection deepened naturally. “We’re about the same age and started our careers around the same time. Our journeys so far have been somewhat similar, so our conversations flowed very naturally,” Hyun Bin said, hinting at the ease they found in each other’s company.

Asked what moment made him fall in love with Son Ye-jin, Hyun Bin explained that there was no single turning point. “There wasn’t a specific moment. It felt like time just passed and I gradually fell for her, like water seeping in. As we worked together and talked, it just happened naturally, as if my clothes slowly got soaked.”

The conversation also touched on the possibility of the couple working together again. Hyun Bin shared that while he remains open to it, he does not envision repeating the same kind of romance drama. “I’m open to working together, but I don’t think we could do something like Crash Landing on You again. If there’s a different story, I’d definitely be interested.”

He went on to suggest ideas that might suit them now, saying, “It might be fun to play a married couple whose relationship suddenly falls apart, or something like Mr. & Mrs. Smith. If there’s another interesting project, I’d be happy to work together again.”

As the discussion shifted to family life, Jae-hyung asked Hyun Bin what it feels like to be a father to such a beloved child. Smiling gently, Hyun Bin replied, “I’m just a very ordinary dad. Even if I try to be strict right now, I don’t think he really understands yet. He might just think, ‘What is he talking about?’ Right now, he’s just so cute.”

The mood turned playful when Jae-hyung posed a hypothetical question about their son wanting to become an actor. Hyun Bin laughed and shook his head. “I don’t really want to start worrying about that already,” he said, before adding after a pause, “I’d need some time to think about it,” prompting laughter.

This year also marked a historic milestone for the couple as they win big at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Award. Hyun Bin and Ye-jin was the first to be announced as the Popular Star Awards recipient along with other prominent South Korean personalities.

Ye-jin won the Best Actress award for the black comedy thriller film No Other Choice, while Hyun Bin was named Best Actor for the biographical period drama film Harbin.

Looking back on that moment, Hyun Bin shared, “I received my award first, but when my wife’s name was called, I felt even happier than when I won.”

Hyun Bin recently delighted Filipino fans when he visited the country for the first time last August for his "Hyun Bin Landing at Solaire" fan meeting.
