MANILA -- The Philippine men's and women's national volleyball teams have both qualified for the Nagoya-Aichi Asian Games in September in Japan, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) announced on Monday.
The Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) sent the email confirming the Philippines' qualification to the Asiad over the weekend, according to POC President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino.
The Alas Women made the cut based on its FIVB ranking among Asian teams, at No. 10, while the Alas Men are at No. 15.
"This is great news for our volleyball program," said Tolentino.
There will be 16 teams each in the men’s and women’s categories in Asian Games volleyball to be played at the Aichi Prefecture from September 27 to October 3.
The other qualified men’s teams are: Japan, Iran, Pakistan, South Korea, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Qatar, Bahrain, Chinese-Taipei, India, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong.
Also competing in the women’s side are: Japan, Kazakhstan, Iran, China, Chinese-Taipei, Thailand, Vietnam, Qatar, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Mongolia and North Korea.
Also set to compete in the Asiad are the beach volleyball squads, led by 2025 Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons.
They will be up against teams from China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Iran, Kazakhstan, Qatar and Oman in the event set at the Hekinan Ryokuchi Beach Court in Hekinan City.
The composition of the teams as well as the coaching staffs remain up in the air, however, after the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) was suspended by the FIVB last Friday over governance concerns.
The POC has indicated that it will abide by the decision of the international federation, and will thus suspend the FIVB when it convenes its General Assembly this month.
