MANILA — The House of Representatives on Tuesday adopted a resolution commending Filipino tennis player Alex Eala for her breakthrough at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.

Eala, only 21, was the first Filipino to reach the single's round of 16 of a grand slam—and she did this by beating then-defending champion Iga Świątek, Australia’s Maya Joint, and Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa.

She fell to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini to conclude her magical run that inspired Filipinos from miles away.

During the plenary session on Wednesday, the House voted via viva voce to adopt House Resolution 1190 filed by House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III, House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos, and House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan, in consolidation with other similar resolutions.

“At 21 years of age, Alex Eala has already brought immense pride and honor to the Filipino people,” the resolution stated.

It also recognized Eala as an inspiration to “present and future generations of Filipinos to embrace continuous growth, pursue excellence in their chosen fields, and contribute meaningfully to national development through their talents, hard work, and determination.”

Eala is currently competing in the DC Open, where she just defeated China's Zheng Qinwen, and is set to face defending champion Leylah Fernandez in the second round.
