An early goal by Regine Rebosora wasn't enough as the Philippine women's national futsal team absorbed a sorry 7-1 loss defeat against Thailand in their first game of the 2025 Southeast Asian Games, Friday at the Bangkok Thonburi University.
Rebosora was at the right place at the right time after a Dionesa Tolentin try at the net as she was credited with the first goal of the match to push the visitors ahead with nine minutes and change left in the opening quarter.
The hosts equalized barely 30 seconds later, however, courtesy of Arriya Saetoen.
It was all Thailand from there.
The hosts netted twice more before the halftime break, through Paerploy Huajaipetch and Jenjira Bubpha.
Bubpha's goal came via a spot kick after a Thai player was taken down near the goal. While Sammy Hughes was able to save the initial shot, there was little she could do about the rebound.
The floodgates opened in the second half, as the Thais unloaded a barrage of goals to go up 7-1 with 6:54 to go.
Despite the loss, the Filipina5 are looking to rebound and hopefully get a better result to keep their chances of a medal alive when they face Malaysia on Saturday, December 13, at the same venue in Bangkok.
"Thailand is a very good team, it's a strong team — ranking fourth. But I think the first 15 minutes, the Philippines played really good and we were very focused, very concentrated but when Thailand scored the fourth goal, I think it's like we were [already] thinking about tomorrow," said Filipina5 head coach Rafa Merino.
The Filipina5 are coming off of a historic World Cup stint as the Philippines hosted the first-ever FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup just weeks before the SEA Games.
