MANILA -- Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino predicts an "uphill battle" for the national athletes at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games next month.
The POC chief cited changes and restrictions being introduced by host Thailand, which may lessen medal prospects in some sports.
"Ma-match okay na 'yun," Tolentino said, reiterating Team Philippines' goal.
"Kasi alam mo naman tayo lang yung host. Walang event si Carlos Yulo. Yung mga medalist natin ng martial arts, inalis yung mga weight categories. Ano pa rin yan, uphill battle pa rin yan. Pero we'll try our best. Marami surprises din," he added.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo earlier decided to sit out the regional showcase due to the restrictions in gymnastics.
Gymnasts are limited to only one apparatus in the final of individual events, preventing an athlete from winning gold in more than one event.
In the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, the Philippines brought home 58 golds, 85 silvers and 117 bronze medals.
With over 1,600 athletes representing the country in the regional showcase, the POC chief believes several sports like boxing can bag medals.
"Alin pa yung pinakamarami [na medal] boxing. Si Eumir [Marcial] lalaro, si [Weljon] Mindoro lalaro. Yun yung mga tinatago natin. Napakiusapan natin na para sa bansa, lumaban naman kahit nasa professional na," he said.
Tolentino likewise cited men's 5x5 basketball, where the Philippines is defending champion.
With 22 days left until the regional showcase, Tolentino said they have yet to decide who will be the official flagbearers during the opening ceremony.
"Wala pang official flagbearers kasi wala pang official games. So ang tanong kasi, sinong nasa Bangkok by that time? Sinong available? Kasi baka ang laro nung flagbearer natin nasa middle ng competition," he explained.
The POC chief said there may be changes in the opening ceremony since Thailand is observing a national mourning period, following the death of former queen Sirikit.
The 33rd SEA Games will run from December 9 to 20 in three cities in Thailand.
