MANILA – For Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao, it's only fitting that the Elasto Painters honor Gabe Norwood by immortalizing his No. 5 jersey.

During Norwood's last flight in the PBA in December, Guiao paid tribute to the decorated swingman for his career that spanned 17 years.

Rain or Shine on Monday announced it will retire Norwood's jersey at halftime of the team's game against the Converge FiberXers on Friday.

"A player who defined an era. A true Rain or Shine legend. A legacy that will never fade," the Elasto Painters wrote on its Facebook page.

"Join us this April 10 at halftime of the Rain or Shine vs. Converge game as we celebrate the career and officially retire the jersey of Gabe Norwood," it added.

Guiao, who earlier pushed for Norwood's jersey to be retired, said it's only fitting to honor him and his career.

"Just appropriate recognition and honor for Gabe Norwood. Ang history ng Rain or Shine ay Norwood era and post-Norwood era. Parang 'yan yung kwento ng Rain or Shine ngayon eh. So naging marker siya ng kwento ng franchise ng Rain or Shine," he said after beating San Miguel, 116-112, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Wednesday.

Norwood helped the Rain or Shine franchise win two PBA championships – the 2012 Governors' Cup and the 2016 Commissioner's Cup – since being drafted first overall in the 2008 draft.

The 41-year-old was awarded Rookie of the Year in 2009, recognized as Defensive Player of the Year in 2010, and an 11-time PBA All-Star, among his numerous accolades.

For Guiao, Norwood should be recognized for his legacy both on and off the court.

"So appropriately, kailangan talaga siyang bigyan ng recognition, ng honor. Not just because he's a great basketball player but because he's a great human being," he said.

Rain or Shine is heading into Friday's game with a 5-0 slate, their best conference start in franchise history.
