A dolphin mother was seen carrying her deceased calf through the waters of the Leschenault Estuary in Western Australia in a display of grief, marine researchers said.

The calf, born just two weeks earlier during winter, died amid concerns about its high respiratory rate.

Drone footage captured by Geographe Marine Research on July 19 to 20 shows the mother, named 'Fraggle', swimming with her dead offspring while other dolphins appeared to show their respect.

The organisation said dolphins typically grieve for days or up to a week, but Fraggle's mourning period extended to 11 days. The loss marks Fraggle's fourth consecutive calf death, it added.
