Newly sworn-in President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday (January 20) to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

The presidential decree said the renaming was “in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people."

Residents on the Gulf coast of the Mexican state of Veracruz, however, were unimpressed.

“He [Trump] has power now, yes,” said Victor Ruiz, on the seafront at Coatzacoalcos; “But to change this – the name of the Gulf of Mexico – that seems absurd to me.”

“The Gulf of Mexico will always be the Gulf of Mexico, that’s the way it is,” another resident added.

The executive order, ‘Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness’, was one of many signed by Trump on his first day back in office.

While he can direct the U.S. Geological Survey to make such a change, it would be unlikely to be recognized internationally.
