MANILA — Tropical depression Maymay and the southwest monsoon or Habagat dumped more than a week's worth of August rain over several drought-hit areas of northern and Central Luzon in just two days, data from PAGASA showed.
In Baguio City, 355.2 millimeters of rain fell from 8 a.m. of August 5 to 8 a.m. of August 7. This is equivalent to 11 days’ worth of August rain in the city.
The following localities also recorded more than a week’s August rain in just 48 hours.
- 164.8 mm Dagupan City, Pangasinan
- 76.3 mm Tanauan City, Batangas
- 58.0 mm Tuguegarao City, Cagayan
Meanwhile, these areas received nearly a week’s rain.
- 191.7 mm Iba, Zambales
- 186.5 mm Subic, Zambales
- 129.2 mm Sinait, Ilocos Sur
- 102.7 mm Cavite City, Cavite
The newly opened Abucay station in Bataan registered 171.9 mm of rainfall due to Habagat.
In Metro Manila, the NAIA station in Pasay City received 89 millimeters of rain, or about two weeks of August precipitation while Science Garden, Quezon City logged 73 mm or about 4 days of August rain in the locality.
While these rains helped ease drought conditions, they also triggered flooding and landslides in several areas.
In Rodriguez, Rizal, two people died in a rockslide on Thursday, while another two were killed in a landslide in La Trinidad, Benguet on Friday.
Rockslides and landslides were also reported in Tuba, Benguet and Sadanga, Mountain Province.
Floodwaters also inundated strawberry farms in La Trinidad, while an overflowing creek affected the Ganassi-Binang Road.
Flooding was also reported in several towns in La Union and Tabuk City, Kalinga.
PAGASA said 29 provinces experienced drought in July, including 12 in northern and Central Luzon.

Before Maymay, tropical cyclones Kiyapo and Luis had also brought rainfall over many parts of Luzon.
With the dissipation of Maymay, the Habagat will continue to prevail over Luzon and Western Visayas through the coming week.
Heavy monsoon rains are expected in Ilocos Region, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
PAGASA warned against the continued threats of flooding and landslides in susceptible areas.
