MANILA — Designed after the traditional jeepney of the Philippines, Pope Francis used a locally-made popemobile when he visited the country in 2015.

The vehicle was unlike any other popemobiles as it was made with special requests from Pope Francis. Non-armored and wide open, the design allowed the pontiff to easily reach out his hand to the public.

“Hindi siya armored, open type para ma-reach out niya yung mga tao.” said Emiliano Lorenzo, Special Project ATPI.

The vehicle was built in around 6 months, from the brainstorming of the concept until the actual construction.

Stored in a warehouse facility of ATPI, the vehicle undergoes periodical maintenance and remains in pristine condition even after 10 years.

“Every time na matapos sa display yan, nililinis namin, binabalutan namin," Lorenzo said.

The vehicle is set to visit churches around Metro Manila. From Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, it will then be transferred to San Antonio Parish Church. —Report from Darylle Sarmiento
