MANILA — Groups taking part in a protest against corruption in the government kept their demonstration in Recto Avenue, Manila on Sunday after failing to reach Mendiola, which is near Malacañang Palace.
This came after police blocked their path to Mendiola, following their march from Luneta.
At the Recto corner of San Sebastian, a large number of police officers had already met the protesters, setting up barricades. Concrete barriers, barbed wire and container vans were also deployed, along with fire trucks.
Around 1:30 in the afternoon, the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) and other groups arrived at Recto Avenue, where their leaders voiced out their grievances against the government, including condemning corruption and calling for the resignation of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte.
They left after around 30 minutes but not without destroying a large effigy of President Marcos and Vice President Duterte.
Teddy Casiño, chairman of Bayan, called the heavy security measures imposed by the police an “overkill,” saying it prevented them from reaching Mendiola.
All roads leading to Mendiola, including Recto, Legarda, and Ayala Bridge, were filled with barbed wire, concrete barriers, and container vans.
This was likely intended to prevent a repeat of the September 21 rally, when violence erupted at after the protesters dispersed at the end of the protest proper.
