In his more than a decade of being active in the local entertainment scene, JM de Guzman has established himself as one of the most talented and versatile actors of his generation. Throughout his career, he has consistently impressed viewers with his remarkable performances across a wide range of teleseryes and films, proving his depth and dedication as an artist.
He may have faced challenges in both his personal and professional lives, yet JM has successfully bounced back and has been booked and busy ever since making his showbiz comeback. And soon, we’re about to see him again onscreen in the highly anticipated action-drama series “Coco Martin’ Sigabo,” where his role remains under wraps.
While we await his return to primetime, let’s look back on JM’s inspiring journey as a Kapamilya actor in this edition of Kapamilya Spotlight.
Many may not know that JM first entered the entertainment industry as part of the youth-oriented program “Ang TV 2,” which aired from 2001 to 2002 and also featured Shaina Magdayao, Denise Laurel, and Empress Schuck. As some of his batchmates continued pursuing showbiz careers, JM stepped away from the spotlight to focus on his studies while also venturing into theater and independent films.
It was through one of his indie film projects that he caught the attention of director Laurenti Dyogi, who invited him to audition for “Midnight Phantom,” one of the stories featured under the “Precious Hearts Romances Presents” banner in 2010. JM made it and became part of the show as Mike, the dependable best friend of the titular character played by Rafael Rosell. He went on to appear in three more PHR Presents installments that same year, namely, “Kristine,” “Alyna,” and “The Substitute Bride.”
The following year, he made his “Maalaala Mo Kaya” debut via the “Balot” episode, where he portrayed “Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2” grand winner Marcelito Pomoy. He followed this with another impressive performance in the “Pasaporte” episode, playing Jay, an overseas Filipino worker who became entangled in a drug trafficking case.
JM's rising star continued to shine when he was cast in the 2011 remake of the classic ABS-CBN soap opera “Mula Sa Puso,” taking on the role of Gabriel Maglayon, originally portrayed by late actor Rico Yan.
Perceived as one of ABS-CBN's most promising young actors at the time, he was entrusted with the title role in the hit afternoon drama “Angelito: Batang Ama.” The series became his breakthrough project, significantly elevating his profile and establishing him as one of the broadcast company’s top leading men.
The massive success of the series spawned to a sequel in 2012 entitled “Angelito: Bagong Yugto.” That same year, he starred in the “Kurtina” episode of MMK as Acmad, a young man who experiences the pain of unrequited love after falling deeply for a woman who does not share his feelings.
After more than a year away from the spotlight, he made his comeback in 2014 and went on to have a busy year with three different TV projects. He began with his first-ever appearance in “Ipaglaban Mo” via the “Ibigay Ang Aming Karapatan” episode, playing the role of Andoy, a fish porter who led his co-workers in a labor rights protest over unpaid benefits and incentives.
He then made a special participation in the family drama “Hawak Kamay” as Brian Agustin, half-brother of Piolo Pascual’s character, Gin Agustin. This was followed by another MMK appearance in the “SIM Card” episode, where he played Joven, a young man who pretends to be in a relationship with a friend to discourage the advances of a persistent admirer.
His hectic schedule continued the following year with stints in three more Kapamilya programs. He starred in the MMK episode “Bota” as Paul, a dedicated firefighter struggling to balance the demands of his profession with his responsibilities as a family man. He later headlined the “Ipaglaban Mo” episode “Totoong Mahal Kita,” portraying Emman, a man who becomes romantically involved with a scam artist.
JM’s last project prior to his two-year hiatus was the afternoon drama “All of Me,” where he played the younger counterpart of Albert Martinez’s character Manuel and assumed the alias Edong.
When he returned to acting in 2018, he was given the lead role in the romantic drama “PHR Presents: Araw Gabi.” He portrayed Adrian Olivar, an ill-tempered CEO determined to restore his family’s struggling resort with the help of an advertising and marketing agency.
The following year, he starred in the MMK episode “Black Belt” episode, portraying mixed martial artist Ramon Gonzales, whose inspiring journey saw him overcome childhood hardships in Bicol and extreme poverty to earn a black belt and compete professionally. He later top-billed the “Ipaglaban Mo” episode “Impostor” as Cedric, a rebellious man who assumes his hardworking brother’s identity and poses as a lawyer, setting off a chain of betrayal and a bitter legal battle.
He also joined the cast of “Pamilya Ko,” where he played one of the primetime series’ central characters, Chico Mabunga.
A decade into his TV acting career, JM snagged his first-ever kontrabida role in 2021 via “Init sa Magdamag,” wherein his portrayal of Peterson Alvarez showcased a darker and more complex side of his acting range. That same year, he was paired with Kapamilya newcomer Janine Gutierrez in the MMK episode “Quarantine Pass,” which chronicled the real-life love story of letter senders Zaldy and Jex.
After gripping us with his performance as Mel, a dedicated worker who fights for his fellow laborers against a corrupt mining company in MMK’s two-part Father’s Day special entitled “Logbook” and “Selda.”
The prolific actor remained busy in 2023 with roles in two teleseryes. He first made a special appearance in the second season of “The Iron Heart” as Brother Joseph Cruz, a religious leader who evolved from antagonist to protagonist. He then delivered another memorable kontrabida performance as the manipulative and abusive Alexander Lualhati in the hit drama “Linlang.”
From October 2025 to April 2026, he was part of the “What Lies Beneath” ensemble, portraying the role of Lucas Santiago, the younger brother of Edong (Jake Cuenca), a man wrongfully accused of murder.
