Having spent a huge and significant part of our lives with our mothers, we have likely gained a deep understanding of how challenging, demanding, and multifaceted motherhood is. Thus, when being portrayed onscreen, it’s really fitting to cast actresses who are moms in real life in order to precisely capture the heart, depth, and nuances of being a mother.
However, there are actresses who are able to prove that while real-life experiences can be an asset or advantage, pure talent is just as powerful in bringing maternal characters to life.
Here are some of the talented Kapamilya actresses who, despite not having children yet in real life, still mastered the art of playing mothers in the teleseryes they had starred in.
Kim Chiu
From charming us with her teeny bopper roles following her victorious stint in “Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition 1,” Kim went on to level up her career by taking on more dramatic projects, with the romance-military series “Tayong Dalawa” (2009) being one of her earliest forays as a versatile actress.
At 19, she already managed to deliver a heartfelt portrayal of motherhood through her character Audrey, who subsequently succumbed to her ailment and left her newborn orphaned after her death.
She also was a mother in the 2014 series “Ikaw Lamang,” wherein her character, Isabel, had two children with her husband—Natalia and Andrea—with whom she got both estranged due to the hapless circumstances they’d gone through. They eventually got reunited with them in the second book of the series.
The Chinita Princess was then cast in the daytime sports drama series “Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin,” in which her character, Bianca, had a son in the latter part of the story.
In 2020, she impressed viewers with her portrayal of Jia in “Love Thy Woman,” whose affair with her half-sister’s husband resulted in a son believed to have died at birth. It was later revealed that the baby had been abducted and secretly given away by her uncle in exchange for money for Jia’s cancer treatment before eventually being adopted by her half-sister and her husband. In the end, she was able to take her son back.
Kim didn’t just break free from her wholesome image in the highly talked-about series “Linlang: The TV version,” but also astounded viewers with her compelling depiction of Juliana, an adulterous wife yet loving mother whom we both abhorred and adored.
Shaina Magdayao
With years of experience as one of the ’90s’ most sought-after child stars, Shaina grew into a versatile actress capable of excelling in any role. And she was able to showcase that through her remarkable performances, especially in the teleseryes that she had starred in, such as in the ones where she took on maternal roles.
Even though her stint was very limited in the 2011 inspirational series “100 Days to Heaven,” wherein she played the young adult counterpart of the lead character Anna Manalastas (Xyriel Manabat/Coney Reyes), she still impressed us with her depiction of an apathetic mom who gave her child up for adoption believing that she wasn’t a good fit to become a mother.
She then got cast in the 2015 series “Nathaniel” as Rachel, the mom of the titular character played by then-child star Marco Masa. In 2018, her “Asintado” character, Samantha, had a daughter who unfortunately died a few months after being born.
Taking on the role of Grace in the 2019 daytime serye “Nang Ngumiti ang Langit,” Shaina served as the stepmom of lead character MikMik (Sophia Reola). She went on to have a special participation in the romance drama series “Can’t Buy Me Love” as Divine Almazan, the mother of Belle Mariano’s character, Caroline Tiu.
And in her latest Kapamilya teleserye appearance in “Sins of the Father,” Shaina played the role of Atty. Leah Rivera, who, beneath her fierce facade, was actually a doting mom to her two kids from her two different relationships.
Julia Montes
Having been in the industry for more than two decades already, not to mention being one of the pioneer cast of the iconic kiddie gag show “Goin’ Bulilit” that has been known to produce some of the top talents in the country, we can say that Julia has been forged by time.
From playing teen characters, she went on to exhibit her versatility as an actress through her depiction of maternal roles in the teleseryes she starred in.
Like Kim, Julia was around 19 as well when she had her first taste of motherhood onscreen through her stint in the 2014 Kapamilya drama series “Ikaw Lamang.” She played Mona, whose one-night stand with her childhood friend, Samuel (Coco Martin), resulted in their marriage and the birth of their son, Gabriel.
After that, her mother-role portrayals started coming one after another in the teleseryes that followed. In “Doble Kara,” her depiction of twins Sara and Kara also meant playing maternal roles twice since both characters already had offspring of their own. Her fiery “Asintado” character, Ana Sarmiento, became a mom in the latter part of the story, while her “24/7” character, Mia Agbayani, was introduced as a single who would do anything to save her ailing child right from the very beginning of the series.
Although her character in her latest teleserye appearance “Saving Grace” wasn’t really the biological mom of the wide-eyed titular character Grace (Zia Grace) but her benevolent teacher and kind abductor, yet we were touched by her unwavering unconditional love for her as if she was the young girl’s real mother.
Bela Padilla
In her almost two decades in the local entertainment scene, Bela has spent half of those at ABS-CBN. As she made the transfer to the media in 2015, she was instantly plunged into heavy drama as she got cast in the inaugural season of “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” as Carmen, the widow of Cardo’s twin brother, Ador (Coco Martin), with whom she shared a child they fondly call “Junior.”
Viewers then witnessed how her “My Dear Heart” character, Clara, served as a loving mom to the titular character, Heart (Heart Ramos), despite the latter being the estranged daughter of her husband, Jude (Zanjoe Marudo).
She once again took on the role of an adoptive mother in “Sino Ang Maysala? Mea Culpa” after her character, Juris, decided to take care of the baby whom she and her friends found in a grassy area in Baguio City and assumed to have belonged to the woman they ran over to one fateful night in Baguio City. Even though she did it at first out of guilt, believing that they had killed the child's mother, Juris still loved the young girl nonetheless, whom she named Leyna (Iyannah Sumalpong).
Her appearance in “Pamilya Sagrado” may have been very limited, yet it was remarkable and significant. Although it was going to be difficult, her character, Cristine Malonzo, made the tough decision of detaching from her illicit lover and raising their child singlehandedly in hopes of being able to correct her past mistakes. Unfortunately, the wife (Mylene Dizon) of her beau (Piolo Pascual) learned about their affair and killed Cristine during their intense altercation at the latter’s place.
Ivana Alawi
It was not only Bela who took on a maternal role in “Sino Ang Maysala? Mea Culpa,” but also Ivana, who “mothered” two children as Lolita. Despite being abused by her violent partner, she still chose to stay with him for the sake of their very young children, whom she did not want to deprive of their basic needs or of having a complete family.
She eventually became a mom in the finale of “A Family Affair,” as her character, Cherry Red, gave birth to her daughter, Malaya, whom she had to raise all by herself after taking some time apart with her husband, Paco (Gerald Anderson).
Charlie Dizon
Several months before turning 30, Charlie marked another milestone in her career as she took on a maternal role for the first time through her “What Lies Beneath” character Beth. She was portrayed as a fiercely devoted but imperfect young mother whose overwhelming love for her daughter, Chloe (Jewel Milag), was often complicated by lingering insecurities and the weight of her dark past.
Xyriel Manabat
After winning us over with her irresistible cuteness and amazing talent as a kid, some of us arguably found it truly unbelievable to watch Xyriel being a mother to one of this generation’s most popular child stars. It can be recalled that in “High Street,” her character Roxy had chosen to singlehandedly raise her son with Archie (Elijah Canlas) after not hearing anything from him since he departed for the United States.
She may have had to juggle her duties as a parent to Riley (Argus Aspiras) with her studies and then her work as a nurse, yet she had managed to do it with the support and help of her older sister and her friends.
These talented Kapamilya stars were able to prove that no role is difficult as long as you have the passion and courage to do it—just like mothers always do, driven by their unconditional love for their children, regardless of whether they receive anything in return.
