Despite being a scion of one of the notable clans in the local entertainment scene, Bela Padilla has long refused to be under their shadows, as we’ve witnessed how she has strived so hard to carve her own path and make a name for herself—to which she amazingly succeeded. Now, she’s not just an actress but also a screenwriter, director, and producer who has brought us several movies that we’ve loved over the past years.
As she celebrates her 10th year as a certified Kapamilya actress—and next year is going to be her 20th anniversary in the industry—she’s marking these momentous milestones in her career by starring in projects that will surely further reinforce her status as one of the most versatile, most talented, and most accomplished artists in the country today.
One of these is the newest ABS-CBN Studios series “Blood vs Duty,” in which she’s poised to astound us with her portrayal of the astute and confident intelligence officer Lara. But before we get to see her take on her newest character, let us first revisit her TV acting journey as a Kapamilya via this Spotlight feature.
Perhaps many would be surprised once they learn that Bela started in showbiz as part of the Star Magic Batch 15 launched in 2007 and made her acting debut via the teen drama anthology “Star Magic Presents: Abt Ur Luv Ur Lyf 2.”
She went on to work under other TV networks during the first half of her career until she decided to return to ABS-CBN in 2015 with the long-running action-drama series “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” being her initial acting project as a Kapamilya. There, she played the role of Carmen Guzman-De Leon, the widow of PS/Insp. Dominador "Ador" B. de Leon, the twin brother of the lead character P/Maj. Ricardo "Cardo" Dalisay (Coco Martin).
It was followed by her only appearance in the crime drama anthology “Ipaglaban Mo,” delivering a powerful performance as Flora, a grieving mother driven to abduct a child after suffering a miscarriage, in the “Sanggol” episode.
From heavy drama, she went on to display her comedic flair through her guest appearance in the weekly sitcom “Home Sweetie Home,” playing the role of Criselda, who was rumored in their neighborhood to be an aswang (or shape-shifter monster).
Bela landed her first starring role in an ABS-CBN teleserye in 2017, headlining the inspirational family drama “My Dear Heart” alongside Zanjoe Marudo, Heart Ramos, and Coney Reyes. She brought life to Clara de Jesus, a woman whose unwavering love and care for the titular character proved that motherhood goes beyond blood.
She went on to score her first-ever “Maalaala Mo Kaya” appearance that same year, moving and inspiring viewers with her affecting portrayal of “Ice Candy” episode letter sender Melanie. Despite having a hump on her back and experiencing a series of tragedies in her life—including sexual assault, her mother’s death, and an unplanned pregnancy—she still chose to carry on with her daughter, whom she’d learned to eventually accept and love genuinely.
In 2018, the seasoned actress once again appeared in “MMK,” breaking our hearts anew as she depicted Karla, a woman who experienced the pain of being cheated on by her longtime boyfriend during their trip in the so-called happiest place on Earth. In spite of how hurtful his betrayal was, she still gave him and their love story a second chance.
The following year, she worked on the crime-drama series “Sino ang Maysala? Mea Culpa,” taking on the role of Juris, a lawyer caught in a moral dilemma after a fateful accident involving her lawyer-friends.
After taking on a long “sabbatical”—as she put it in one of her recent interviews—from doing teleseryes, fans were truly delighted when she finally came back in 2024 and had a special participation in the primetime drama “Pamilya Sagrado.” She played the role of Cristine Malonzo, who was killed by the
wife of her boss, then-Mayor Rafael Sagrado (Piolo Pascual), with whom she had an illicit affair and a child, Moises (Kyle Echarri).
She also made her third appearance on “MMK” when it returned in 2025, depicting the harrowing plight of Nadia, an overseas Filipino worker who unfortunately fell victim to a human trafficking scheme in Thailand in her hopes of giving her family a better life, in the “SIM Card” episode.
With how powerful and remarkable her every performance was in the previous series she had starred in, we can’t help but be thrilled to see Bela display a different side of her in her newest role in the upcoming series “Blood vs Duty.”
“Blood vs Duty” is the latest offering from ABS-CBN’s JRB Creative Production, the team behind hit Kapamilya series “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin,” “Darna,” “Nag-aapoy na Damdamin,” and “Sins of the Father,” led by business unit head Julie Anne R. Benitez and creative head Dindo Perez. It is directed by FM Reyes, Bjoy Balagtas, and Rico Navarro, along with action director Erwin Tagle.
