Since he’s still relatively new in the industry, promising singer, songwriter, and music producer Jarlo Base remains a fresh face to many—naturally sparking curiosity about what he has to offer. His participation in the fourth season of “Your Face Sounds Familiar” has proven to be an ideal platform to introduce himself to a wider audience, through which he gets to showcase not only his singing talent and handsome looks but also develop his range and versatility as an all-around performer.
As “Your Face Sounds Familiar” nears its finale, let us look back on the 12 acts of the “Breakout Crooner” that impressed viewers and marked his journey on the reality singing competition.
For the opening salvo, he immediately showed off his singing and dancing skills with a performance of “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” as its original singer, Usher. As a newcomer, Jarlo ‘fessed up about feeling completely under pressure at the time, which eased thanks to his fellow celebrity performers who guided him and cheered him up.
Although the jury—comprised of Gary Valenciano, Sharon Cuneta, and Ogie Alcasid—pointed out a few areas for improvement in his performance, he still managed to earn a total of seven points from them, tying with Rufa Mae Quinto and Dia Mate for the 6th to 8th spots in the rankings.
In the following round, Jarlo got to show his crooner side as he serenaded the audience with “Sining,” a collaboration between his icon-slash-idol, Jay R, and fast-rising artist Dionela. His performance even got the approval of the Philippines’ King of R&B, who appeared on the episode and spoke with everyone via live video call.
During the brief exchange, Jay R thanked Jarlo for the effort and commitment he put into studying his style, and praised him for delivering a truly entertaining act. The performance ultimately earned Jarlo five points from the jury.
After a couple of setbacks, Jarlo bounced back with a come-from-behind win in Week 3, making everyone completely kilig with his spot-on impersonation of Jericho Rosales singing the well-loved song “Pusong Ligaw.” Aside from his notable resemblance to the Asian Drama King, he also impressed the jury with the confidence he exuded onstage, making him one of their top performers in that particular round.
He received six points each from jurors Sharon Cuneta, Ogie Alcasid, Nyoy Volante, and Klarisse de Guzman, while his co-performers Pepe Herrera, Alexa Ilacad, JM Dela Cerna, Akira Morishita, and Jason Dy each awarded him their three points. With a total of 33 points, Jarlo secured his first-ever weekly winner title in the competition.
The “Breakout Crooner” continued to capture hearts in the fourth round, charming everyone with his performance of “All of Me” as American singer-songwriter and music producer John Legend. Noticing the palpable improvement he had made since the program began, the jury expressed how proud they were of his progress. They each bestowed him five points, placing Jarlo in 5th place for the round.
He then brought the Coldplay concert experience to the “Your Face Sounds Familiar” stage in the fifth round as he impersonated the band’s frontman, Chris Martin. Apart from being armed with the encouraging words that he had received from the jury in his previous performances, he also seemed extra inspired by the presence of his beloved girlfriend, Jas Valentin, who was among the live audience at the time.
Everyone enjoyed it so much, which earned him a combined score of 18 points—15 points from the jury and three points from fellow celebrity performer Rufa Mae Quinto.
Jarlo once again hit the bottom of the rankings during the special Christmas episodes of the show after garnering only three points from the jury for his impersonation of seasoned singer-actor Ariel Rivera as he performed the classic OPM song “Sana Ngayong Pasko.”
His very masculine physique—not to mention huge build—didn’t stop Jarlo from nailing his first and only gender-switch experience as he impersonated the late British singer-songwriter and musician Amy Winehouse. Clad in a wig inspired by one of her iconic looks and a little black dress, he indeed wowed and amused the spectators—especially the jury—with how he was able to somehow replicate the voice of his icon, whom he regarded as his idol.
And all the effort he put in, along with the pressure and nerves he felt indeed leading to the performance, truly paid. Jarlo garnered a combined score of 17 points from the jury, plus an additional three points from his fellow artist Akira Morishita, putting him in the 3rd place of Week 7.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to maintain his momentum, hitting the bottom of the rankings for two consecutive weeks after garnering the lowest points from the jury. In Week 7, he only got three points for his transformation into Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano as he performed “Ililigtas Ka Niya,” while he received five points for his rendition of “Bailamos” as the King of Latin Pop, Enrique Iglesias.
Even though he clearly struggled with various aspects of his performance, especially in mimicking the voices of his icons, Jarlo still impressed the jury with the confidence he exuded as he showed genuine effort to step into their shoes.
After two rounds of low scores, Jarlo staged a strong comeback in the 10th round with his spot-on transformation to Vhong Navarro performing “Totoy Bibo.” His entertaining act earned him high praise from the jury, as well as the approval of the “Your Face Sounds Familiar” host who even danced alongside him during his act.
Jarlo earned a total of 19 points from jurors Sharon Cuneta, Gary Valenciano, and Ogie Alcasid, while his fellow celebrity performers Dia Mate and JMielle (JM Dela Cerna and Marielle Montellano) added three points each to his score.
In the next two rounds, wherein he rocked the stage with his rendition of “Tatsulok” as OPM icon Bamboo and flexed his rapping skills in his performance of “The APL Song” as Black Eyed Peas member and Pinoy pride Apl.de.Ap, Jarlo consistently landed in the 5th place.
