As much as we love watching our favorite love teams serve drama and destiny on-screen, nothing beats the 'kilig' when we see them let loose and just be their goofy selves in unscripted moments.
Last year was a pure display of exactly that on Kapamilya Chat, courtesy of the cutest love teams we stan, who gamely took on fun challenges at our favorite virtual ‘tambayan’ with the stars.
MarJo
First on our list is the MarJo tandem of Marvin Austin and Jolina Magdangal. There was a time in the ‘90s when they didn’t just rule the love team scene —they became a whole universe. MarJo (though we didn’t call them that then, because portmanteaus weren’t a thing yet) has had a grip on pop culture so tight even today’s generation is still catching the feels from their movies, thanks to social media.
Marvin and Jolina were practically inseparable in romance flicks back in the day. And if you were old enough to witness their reign, your idea of love was probably shaped by their movies. Whether it was the heartache of falling for your best friend (‘Labs Kita… Okey Ka Lang?’ still hurts), the struggle of hiding a relationship from disapproving parents, or ignoring red flags in the name of love, their stories defined an era of romance.
So, in an episode aired on January 29, Kapamilya Chat thought of taking the duo to a trip down memory lane by asking them to watch and react to their old movie clips. And boy, did they bring us 'bukingan' and behind-the-scenes stories that revived our MarJo hearts!
We bet that if there's one MarJo line living rent-free in your head, it would be, "Oh yes, kaibigan mo lang ako and that's all I ever was to you, Ned, your best friend… And I'm so stupid to make the biggest mistake of falling in love with my best friend." It's the script from "Labs Kita... Okey Ka Lang?" that has defined best-friends-to-lovers heartbreak since 1998.
Marvin and Jolina almost teared up while re-watching the clip. Jolina playfully confessed, "Alam mo ba kung bakit grabe 'yung iyak ko no'n? 'Yun talaga ang nararamdaman ko no'n." And then they revealed that the scene was actually a re-take! The first version felt lacking emotional punch, so director Jerry Lopez Sineneng came up with a stronger script, which he himself wrote on the way to the set. He really wanted to make sure every word landed the right emotions for Ned and Bujoy (the characters). And clearly, he succeeded, with the new generation still discovering and quoting the dialogue on social media today.
JMFyang
After Marvin and Jolina served peak '90s love team realness, next on our list is the new-gen duo of JM Ibarra and Fyang Smith, just two of our constant visitors on the show. The “PBB Gen 11” ex-housemates made us giggle as they took on the 'Physical Touch' Challenge where they opened up about how they speak this love language in certain situations.
Our favorite was when Fyang revealed that her way of apologizing would be to gently lean her head on JM’s shoulder while softly whispering, “Sorry.” Aww. And even the frostiest of hearts would melt at Fyang's statement when JM was asked how he'd get her attention if she were too caught up to notice him. Before he could respond, Fyang already chimed in, "Never ako nagiging busy sa kanya." Doesn't that line deserve a spot in the greatest love team one-liners hall of fame?
In other episodes, they also got real and so sweet while playing games like the Tic-Tac-Toe Challenge, Compatibility Test, Bardagulan Game and Dikitan Challenge.
FranSeth
They may be low-key when it comes to their moments together, but every time they get caught in the feels and end up spilling something about their closeness, Francine Diaz and Seth Fedelin make us feel real emotions.
Remember that October 1 episode from last year when, during a game, Seth shared what Francine is like during 'tampuhan' moments? And then he reassured her that he actually likes the one thing she’s insecure about, which is her singing voice. While promoting their then-series "Sins of the Father," they also opened up about how they express care through physical touch.
DonBelle
One of the reasons we love watching DonBelle interviews, aside from the undeniable chemistry and butterfly-inducing moments, is the fresh Gen Z perspective they bring to everyday topics.
In a Kapamilya Chat episode on January 16, Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano shared their insightful takes on red flags in relationships, while promoting their then-series "How To Spot A Red Flag." DonBelle got real about the traits they consider deal-breakers in a relationship—like gaslighting, being controlling, and not knowing how to apologize (major yikes). Belle was firm on gaslighting being a no-go, while Donny emphasized the importance of respecting boundaries and open communication. They also tackled trickier flags like posting too much on social media and not being able to commit.
But it wasn’t all serious talk with DonBelle! Bubblies' main stan also brought the fun when they took on the viral "Eh, Ikaw" trend, where players do one repetitive action and take turns giving it random, creative meanings. Even in a supposedly 'chaotic' game, these two still looked effortlessly adorable!
KimPau
We don't need to read between the lines to see that Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino’s bond has only grown stronger as they worked on one hit project after another, from "Linlang" to their recent "The Alibi," and they brought that closeness to a series of Kapamilya Chat games last year (March 28 episode).
The pair had us breathless with their super 'nakaka-soft' answers in the “Dear KimPau” Challenge, where they had to complete prompts and questions for each other. We bet all KimPau fanatics ran out of air when Kim jestingly asked Paulo, "What if tayo?" If words can manifest, then hey universe, please take note!
They also played the "Match It" Challenge, where they had to match the arrangement of fruits in a mystery box to their counterparts outside. Well, this game was the perfect way to show off their playful side while also testing their instincts. And who would have thought that a serious and reserved guy like Paulo could match the bubbly energy of Kim ? Oh, the magic that 'love' does to us!
