TODAY’S SLANGUAGE: (Gen Z) “delulu”

Delulu is short for delusional. It’s Gen Z internet slang used in a playful way to describe someone who’s imagining or believing in something unrealistic, usually about love, celebrity crushes, or fandoms. In tagalog, parang “nag-iilusyon” or “umaasa sa wala.” It’s used in a light, playful way, not as harsh as “ilusyonado.”

Gamitin natin nang bongga (with reference to famous female kontrabidas):

 • Daniela Mondragon in Kadenang Ginto

Daniela dragged her red suitcase across every street corner while staying delulu that she could still beat Romina.

 • Nicole Esquivel in The Legal Wife

Nicole thought that Adrian would leave Monica for her, and it was the most delulu teleserye move ever.

 • Claudia Buenavista in Pangako Sa ’Yo (2015)

Claudia always thought she could outwit everyone and keep her grip on power. The more she schemed, the faster her plans crumbled. Peak kontrabida delulu

 • Clara Del Valle in Mara Clara

Convinced she could erase Mara’s place in her family and in Christian’s heart, Clara’s entire existence was one giant delulu

Some delulu ended in heartbreak, some became memes, and a lucky few turned to happy endings!
