Over the past decades, Dindo Arroyo, Bembol Roco, and Rez Cortez have been known as three of Philippine cinema’s most iconic on-screen villains. But in the iWant original action-comedy-drama movie “Kontrabida,” which premiered last Tuesday, August 19, they’re able to prove that they can be heroes on and off screen.
But before we get to witness their less serious and lighthearted facets that we don’t see often on-cam, the trio first unleashed their playfulness in the couple of games specially prepared for them—with the “Bida ng mga Kontrabida Challenge” being the first one—during their guesting on Kapamilya Chat.
In this game, the three veteran action stars were asked to deliver iconic lines from movies that they had picked from a jar the kontrabida way. Apparently, they all chose to keep it calm yet powerful on the first round.
Rez did his rendition of “Negosyo o kalayaan? Bayan o sarili? Pumili ka!” from the 2015 historical biopic “Heneral Luna”; Bembol channeled the “Diamond Star” in him as he uttered, “Para kang karinderyang bukas sa lahat ng gustong kumain!” from the 1985 drama film “Palimos ng Pag-ibig"; while Dindo gave his twist on the famous line of Piolo Pascual in “Starting Over Again”, which was, “Ano ang karapatan mong hingin ang mga bagay na hindi mo binigay?!”
For the second round, they stepped up their game by throwing their lines in a more intense manner. We were reminded by the late Eddie Garcia when he did his version of his famous line “Marami ka pang bigas na kakainin!” from the 1994 flick “Marami Ka Pang Kakaining Bigas”; while Rez did his own take of the late Rudy Fernandez’s line from the 1991 film “Markang Bungo”, which was, “Trabaho lang ito, walang personalan!”
It was Lito Lapid in the 2000 film “Pasasabugin Ko Ang Mundo Mo,” whom Dindo channeled in the second line he picked, which was, “Ang mundo mo ay may patakaran. At ang patakaran, pera!”
Directed by JR Reyes and produced by iWant and MAVX Productions, “Kontrabida” offers a thrilling and humorous twist on the action genre, blending nostalgia, wit, and heartfelt moments.
