When getting married, it’s highly important that we do not only have a strong and beautiful relationship with our spouse but with his family as well since we’re going to run into them, or even live with them perhaps, for a very long time.
While some people are able to build cordial ties with their in-laws, others find it really challenging to do so due to various reasons. Just like Jackie Guerrero, the character played by seasoned actress Angel Aquino in “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” who has a surly relationship with her domineering mother-in-law (MIL), Doña Pilar Guerrero, portrayed by veteran actress Celia Rodriguez.
Let us revisit the scenes that display their spicy puksaan, or wild confrontations, that add excitement in every episode of the well-loved action-drama series in this edition of Friday 5.
Since both of them have strong personalities, it’s truly inevitable for Jackie and Doña Pilar to engage in fiery clashes. While some daughters-in-law (DIL) fold when being criticized or reprimanded by their mothers-in-law, Jackie refuses to be overpowered by Doña Pilar during their showdowns.
In one of their spats, Doña Pilar called her out for meddling with their politics-related family issue, to which Jackie retorted that she was just being a mom to her son, Miguelito (Jake Cuenca), and she only wants what’s best for him. Jackie then further agitated the Guerrero matriarch by insinuating that when it comes to taking advantage of other people, it should be with her whom she has to seek advice.
Doña Pilar clapped back by reminding Jackie that she would never be part of their family if not for her, as well as that she better behaves so that she wouldn’t be compelled to bring her back to her once miserable life.
As Jackie expressed her desire to also run for office as a party-list representative, Doña Pilar immediately voiced her objection about it since, aside from using their surname for her personal gains, she doubted that Jackie could win the elections. But Jackie defended herself by enumerating the things she could do for their family, especially for Miguelito’s political career once she makes it to Congress.
The Guerrero matriarch continued to ridicule Jackie when she showed interest to her son’s proposal for her to become their party’s mayoral candidate, telling her to remember what kind of person she is to avoid getting delusional.
With his life being endangered, his husband, Mayor Roberto Guerrero (Albert Martinez), scolded Jackie for still carelessly going out and not ensuring the safety of their son. Of course, Doña Pilar found another reason to scoff at her, tagging her as a good-for-nothing mom. Jackie indignantly replied that she is also occupied by her personal pursuits for the City of Manila and that Miguelito is already too old to be treated as a kid.
Doña Pilar then relentlessly mocked not just her daughter-in-law but her two gay fashion designers as well, as she witnessed and chimed in to their conversation. The old woman laughed at their visitors’ flabbergasted reaction upon hearing her announcement and went on to insult them by saying that their creations are ugly and just a waste of their money.
Being the palaban that she is, Jackie derided her MIL by telling their guests, “Huwag n’yo nang pansinin ‘yan. Naiinggit lang ‘yan kasi napaglipasan na. Saka wala na kasing silbi sa politika.” This definitely annoyed Doña Pilar, who called her cheap, threatened to tell the rest of the family to drop their support for her, and wished her bad luck.
Their exchange of disparaging words didn’t stop there, as Doña Pilar went on to warn Jackie about doing things that could ruin the reputation of their family and then called her arrogant after she responded to her quite impolitely. As the old woman told her that she could never fool her, unlike what she could do to other people, the feisty daughter-in-law retorted that she didn’t need to pull a trick on anyone since she could get whatever she wanted as the first lady of Manila.
