In the past weeks following "FPJ’s Batang Quiapo's" announcement that Tindeng (Charo Santos)'s backstory would be explored in the series' new chapter, fans immediately started speculating about who would play the character's young version.
Some assumed Andrea Brillantes would take on the role, but as it turned out, she’s portraying an entirely new character, Fatima, the daughter of a family of scammers. Others thought Lara Quigaman might return since she was the original Tindeng in the pilot episode. But now we’ve figured out that Lara represents Tindeng in her middle-aged motherhood years and likely won’t be appearing anytime soon. Because, as revealed in the recent episode, the Tindeng we’ll be seeing in the new flashbacks is much younger, and she's played by none other than Elisse Joson.
Elisse’s task for the series was no easy feat, with emotionally heavy scenes that demanded a lot from her. But looking at these behind-the-scenes photos, it’s clear how much she savored the experience of bringing such a gargantuan role to life.
Keeping viewers even more stunned, Jhong Hilario also made an unexpected entrance as the young Gustavo, a character now portrayed in his older years by Dante Rivero.
And with that, it’s finally confirmed that Tindeng shares a past with Gustavo, a history that continues to haunt her and one she’s been desperately trying to escape.
These haunting memories were triggered when Tindeng, who only wanted to seek guidance from Poong Nazareno, decided to visit Quiapo Church with her friend, Roda (Joel Lamangan). But much to her surprise, the peaceful moment was disrupted by the unexpected arrival of the Guerrero clan. Their presence, in what seemed like an early display of political campaigning, stirred something deep within Tindeng, forcing her to confront a past she had long tried to bury.
She locked eyes with Gustavo’s wife, Pilar (Celia Rodriguez). Overcome with panic, Tindeng immediately fled upon realizing that Pilar was about to confront her. She rushed to hide inside one of the confessionals as fear and pain came crashing down on her. In that moment, the traumatic memories resurfaced—Gustavo raped her when she was working as an office staff for him back when he was still serving as mayor. By piecing together past events, we uncover the truth that Tindeng had Marites (Cherry Pie Picache) as a result of Gustavo’s assault.
Meanwhile, in an unexpected twist, Roda unknowingly saved Tindeng from further trouble. Just as Pilar was approaching the confessional, Roda enthusiastically intercepted her to strike up a conversation, telling the powerful woman that he's a huge fan of hers. His excitement kept Pilar preoccupied long enough that she ultimately decided to turn back and rejoin her family, leaving Tindeng undetected.
The star power in this encounter feels tangible even in the behind-the-scenes footage. In an set visit reel shared by CCM Film Productions, we get a glimpse of the meticulous preparations that went into filming this major sequence inside Quiapo Church itself.
As always, the creatives showed impressive attention to detail, from the cinematic shots to the precise blocking of the crowd, as the scene involved many talents acting as churchgoers and supporters of the Guerrero family. The production also went all out with the props. They even created campaign merch like handheld fans and bottled water labeled with images of the Guerrero family, to capture the reality of local politics.
Unit director Darnel Villaflor explained that while the scene may be brief, it is pivotal and deeply symbolic as it not only unearths Tindeng’s painful backstory but also sets the stage for the inevitable connection between the Guerrero and Montenegro families.
"Dahil si Tanggol (Coco Martin) ay nasa Quiapo at si Tanggol ay nasa jurisdiction ng mga Guerrero, doon natin mapapanood kung paano ma-i-involve si Tanggol. Malalaman rin natin na si Tanggol, na isang Montenegro, ay may malalim na koneksyon sa mga Guerrero," Direk Darnel explained.
