Before the Kapamilya Christmas Station IDs became the grand, emotionally charged spectacles we know today, they also went through years of trial and transition.
The first decade of the 2000s marked a phase of creative testing, as ABS-CBN explored different sounds, themes, and formats to find the rhythm that would truly capture the Filipino Christmas spirit until one song in 2009 struck gold and redefined what a Christmas ID could be. Since then, the Kapamilya CID has evolved with the times.
Testing the Christmas formula (2002-2008)
These early years of the Kapamilya Christmas Station IDs were defined by experimentation. ABS-CBN was still figuring out what kind of holiday storytelling would resonate most with the audience—sometimes leaning on music and spectacle, other times on emotion and simplicity.
In 2002, ABS-CBN launched its first-ever Christmas plug, “Isang Pamilya, Isang Puso Ngayong Pasko.” Unlike today’s all-star recordings, the first-ever Christmas jingle was interpreted by just one artist, Dianne Dela Fuente, with a supporting choir. Dianne herself didn’t even appear in the video, having only recorded a mash-up of Jackie DeShannon’s “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” made popular in the late ’60s, and a short original composition by Jesse Lasaten, written specifically for this holiday ID. The music wasn’t likely created to be a singalong anthem or a caroling favorite, but rather, it only served its purpose as a campaign track.
Those were the years when ABS-CBN tinkered with the formula. The 2003 “DisyembRegalo” completely departed from the musical format and featured the late Comedy King, Dolphy, delivering a touching monologue on selflessness. The familiar chorus of “Isang Pamilya, Isang Puso Ngayong Pasko” from the previous year was woven into the background, but only midway through and toward the end. Perhaps this was also a way of testing if the message could stand on its own.
In 2005, similar to the inaugural campaign, the network once again relied on a readily available track—APO Hiking Society’s “Himig ng Pasko,” which simply played in the background. Notably, there were no celebrity performers that year. Instead, the video featured ordinary Filipinos living out the messages of Christmas love and kindness.
And it wasn’t just one APO Hiking Society classic that found its way into the Christmas Station IDs. In 2006, their song “Tuloy Pa Rin ang Pasko” was refreshed by the OPM band Orange & Lemons for the campaign “Angat ang Ligaya ng Pasko.”
During this phase, the only all-star ensemble version emerged in 2004 through “Sabay Tayo, Kapamilya,” which introduced a livelier, pop-oriented sound performed by "ASAP" mainstays and the new generation of singing champs—a preview of the all-star recordings that would later define the tradition. This was the first Kapamilya Christmas anthem to include the lovely vocals of Sarah Geronimo.
Reminiscent of 2003's simplicity was the 2007 “Walang Mag-Iisa Ngayong Pasko." Apart from a faint choral section heard in the background, there were no lyrics for the audience to sing along to. Instead, it featured spoken messages from Kapamilya artists and news personalities reflecting on the true spirit of Christmas.
As if following the concept of the previous year, 2008 also veered away from featuring a highlight song. Instead, it focused on personal reflections from Kapamilya stars as they shared their Christmas wishes and thoughts on the true essence of the season. The music only appeared in short intervals, with Sarah being the sole artist heard singing a few lines of accompaniment.
At this point, ABS-CBN was beginning to explore the potential of creating timeless Christmas anthems through its Station IDs —something that audiences could sing, remember, and truly make their own. That moment wouldn’t arrive until the following year, with “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko.”
The Visuals: Between Star Power and Simplicity (2002-2008)
Visually, the early Christmas SIDs swung between grand and grounded. The inaugural 2002 video brimmed with star power—icons like Sharon Cuneta, Claudine Barretto, Piolo Pascual, and the power quartet of Vilma Santos and the late Nora Aunor, Fernando Poe Jr., and Dolphy—captured in festive, family-themed vignettes. Dolphy became the recurring closing figure for several years, starting a long-running fan tradition of guessing who would appear in the final frame.
Yet amid the glitter, there were also years when the network scaled back. As mentioned earlier, the 2005 campaign featured no celebrities at all—just everyday Kapamilyas passing on good deeds in a visual chain of generosity. This minimalist direction would later inspire the network’s move toward storytelling over star-studded tableaux.
By 2006, ABS-CBN began blending both worlds—returning to an all-star cast while weaving in genuine Christmas moments featuring ordinary Kapamilyas. The following year, 2007, brought a stronger newsroom presence, as anchors and reporters joined in spreading the Yuletide message. The 2008 edition, which put the spotlight on a new generation of Kapamilya faces, such as Makisig Morales and Kathryn Bernardo, showed clear signs of visual evolution through the use of light and motion graphics.
Across those years, one thing stayed constant, which was the intent to connect emotionally. Fun fact: In the 2006 music video ("Angat Ang Ligaya Ng Pasko"), they even used recycled materials for the set design to symbolize how Filipinos make the most of what they have and still find reasons to celebrate with joy.
From 2002 to 2008, the Christmas Station IDs were like a creative tug-of-war in terms of music and casting—sometimes lavish and star-studded, sometimes modest—but those were also the years when ABS-CBN discovered that beyond the spectacle, the real magic of creating a Christmas ID comes from sincerity.
That realization would soon give birth to a game-changer—the 2009 “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko,” a release that would turn the annual campaign into a full-blown national phenomenon.
Hitting the Right Tune (2009 to 2019)
The 2009 track “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko” changed the DNA of the Kapamilya Christmas Station IDs. Written by Robert Labayen and composed by husband-and-wife duo Marcus and Amber Davis, the song was catchy enough to hum along to, yet filled with the right amount of emotion that moved people. There was a certain magic in how it sounded both celebratory and comforting, as if it understood exactly what the nation needed to hear at the time.
The inspiration came from the year’s top-rating primetime series “May Bukas Pa,” whose child protagonist Santino, played by Zaijian Jaranilla, affectionately called Jesus “Bro.” The Station ID was completed at a time when the country, particularly Metro Manila, was still reeling from Typhoon Ondoy’s devastation.
Featuring over 300 Kapamilya talents, broadcasters, and ordinary Filipinos, the music video visually mirrored the song’s spirit of unity tied to the message that there is light even after the storm—and that light is Christ.
From then on, ABS-CBN had found the right formula—the sweet spot between catchy and heartfelt, upbeat but with just enough sentimentality. That sound carried into the following year with “Ngayong Pasko Magniningning ang Pilipino,” a bright and hopeful anthem that celebrated Pinoy pride.
Behind many of these now-iconic anthems were recurring composers like Jimmy Antiporda, Thyro Alfaro, and Yumi Lacsamana, whose touch helped shape the signature sound of a Kapamilya Christmas.
Aside from the song itself, this era also built excitement around who would sing the Christmas jingle each year. Since the lineup constantly changed, fans looked forward to hearing new voices and collaborations every season. In 2009, “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko” featured an all-star ensemble but was opened by Piolo Pascual and KC Concepcion. The next year, “Ngayong Pasko Magniningning ang Pilipino” took a different turn from last year's group recording as it only featured two singers, Gary Valenciano and Toni Gonzaga, accompanied by a choir. The following year, 2011, brought another surprise when ABS-CBN tapped 11-year-old Filipino-Canadian YouTube sensation Maria Aragon to record “Da Best ang Pasko ng Pilipino.”
One of the most notable evolutions during this phase was how the production scale grew bigger and bolder. The Christmas Station IDs began to take viewers beyond local scenes, featuring Kapamilya stars meeting Filipinos abroad to show that the spirit of a Pinoy Christmas transcends borders.
The Shift in Storytelling (2012 to 2019)
While the earlier Christmas Station IDs had already shone a light on ordinary Filipinos, 2012’s “Lumiliwanag ang Mundo sa Kuwento ng Pasko” took that storytelling a step further. For the first time, it featured soundbites from Kapamilyas whose stories inspired the music video.
From here on, the Kapamilya Christmas IDs began to feel more like short films than jingles. Each one stretched beyond six minutes as it weaved heartfelt reflections and true-to-life case studies in between the star-studded singing, dancing, and festive scenes (which makes you a little sentimental, thinking they used to wrap things up in just two minutes back in the day).
The “real stories with soundbites" format became even more prominent in the following year’s “Magkasama Tayo sa Kwento ng Pasko” (2013). The almost ten-minute special interlaced seven stories of everyday Filipinos with celebrity segments that highlighted their personal advocacies and tear-jerking interactions with the featured Kapamilyas.
The longest Christmas ID of this era came in 2019 with “Family Is Forever,” a nearly 13-minute tribute that looked back on ABS-CBN’s 65 years on Philippine television. It opened with the message, “Balikan natin ang ilang alaala sa 65 na taon nating pagsasama,” and played like a grand time capsule. The ID knitted together melodies and lyrics from the network’s most beloved themes—2009’s “Bro, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko,” 2017’s “Just Love,” and 2018’s “Family Is Love.” It also featured reunions of the celebrities and ordinary Kapamilyas who had appeared in past editions, as if closing the loop on years of shared stories.
These were also the years when “grand” became the standard, when every Kapamilya Christmas SID looked like a festival of stars. In 2018, over 400 Kapamilya artists assembled for the "Family Is Love" campaign (a huge leap from the early 2000s, when some IDs went completely celeb-free).
New Era (2020 to 2025)
“Ikaw ang Liwanag at Ligaya” marked a turning point for the Kapamilya Christmas Station IDs. Released in 2020—the same year ABS-CBN lost its franchise and the world battled the COVID-19 pandemic—it carried a message that even in the darkest times, there’s always light within us because God is the source.
The track featured a multilingual bridge, with “liwanag” and “ligaya” sung and rapped in 20 local and international languages by KZ Tandingan, Morissette, Janine Berdin, Jona, Bamboo, and Elha Nympha. The only other time ABS-CBN played with multiple dilects before this was in 2007’s “Walang Mag-iisa Ngayong Pasko,” where regional anchors delivered Christmas greetings in their mother tongue.
And because of the pandemic, artists recorded their parts from home. This spirit of collaboration would carry over to the next Christmas Station IDs, as each year brought more and more Kapamilya artists lending their voices to the recording sessions.
In this new era, the Christmas IDs began to stretch longer and feel more immersive—less like a music video, and more like a documentary of shared lives. The focus shifted toward the personal stories of ordinary Kapamilyas whose experiences embodied the themes of hope, resilience, and community. Each year, the storytelling grew richer. The 2021 “Andito Tayo Para sa Isa’t Isa” ran for 18 minutes, followed by 2022’s “Tayo ang Ligaya ng Isa’t Isa” at 16 minutes, 2023’s “Pasko ang Pinakamagandang Kuwento” at almost 14, and the record-breaking 2024 “Our Stories Shine This Christmas,” which lasted a full 25 minutes.
From two-minute jingles to long-form storytelling, the Kapamilya Christmas Station ID has evolved into more than just a yearly campaign but a showcase of Filipino values and Christmas spirit.
