Jason Dy leveled up in the October 26 episode of "Your Face Sounds Familiar" as he morphed into British icon Sam Smith.
We can actually call Jason a 'Sam Smith' veteran. After all, it was a ‘Sam Smith’ song that he used for his "The Voice of the Philippines" Season 2 audition back in 2014, earning him a four-chair turn. But this time, singing the icon's hit, "Dancing With A Stranger" came with a new challenge, as he had to copy him exactly, from Sam’s persona and vocal texture down to the smallest detail.
During the mentoring session, resident vocal coach Klarisse de Guzman emphasized the distinct soulful, rounded tone of Sam's voice, telling Jason, "Para siyang laging may laman 'yung bibig."
Tackling the moves, mentor Nyoy Volante reminded him that “Dancing With a Stranger,” the song he would be performing, was released at the time when Sam had fully come out and owning his true self. So he wanted Jason to channel that energy, which he described as "very feminine pero mararamdaman mo 'yung joy inside." Nyoy wanted him to let loose and have fun on stage.
And boy, did he deliver! Jason’s impersonation was so fab and confident, and totally on vibe. He had the best time doing it too since it was way different from the usual slow, emotional Sam songs he’s performed before.
The judges were all praises. Nyoy and Klarisse said they enjoyed the performance and that Jason even exceeded their expectations, with Nyoy adding that Jason might be better than Sam himself, which Ogie Alcasid agreed with.
And then everyone had a good laugh when hosts Vhong Navarro and Jhong Hilario dared the other celebrity performers to take on the “Dancing With a Stranger” Challenge, where they had to act as if they were in a club, dancing and trying to ask each other for their numbers. If JM Dela Cerna and Marielle Montellano brought out some 'kilig' vibes, Rufa Mae Quinto and Jarlo Base's scene played out like a comedy skit.
