Cycling has been one of the hottest fitness trends in recent years—and for good reasons, such as being an enjoyable and refreshing way to break a sweat. For biking enthusiast and actor Donny Pangilinan, it's also about immersing himself in the charm of new communities, soaking in the beauty of the great outdoors, and finding freedom in every ride. Check out this feature as Donny talks about what fuels his passion for cycling!
Athleticism runs deep in Donny's family. His parents, Anthony Pangilinan and Maricel Laxa, are known as one of the most fitness-loving couples in showbiz, so it's no surprise that their passion for sports was passed down to their five children. Donny fondly remembers how, as kids, he and his siblings would join their parents in triathlon events and they would train as a family in swimming, biking, and running,
He also used to bond a lot with his dad through biking sessions. When he was only 12, he and Anthony completed an impressive 80-kilometer ride—his longest ever at the time. It was during those sessions with his dad that his love for cycling truly began.
Today, biking remains Donny's go-to activity whenever he wants to get moving. And one of the best things about cruising on two wheels is the sense of community it brings. Donny mentions that cycling groups often plan itineraries and meet at designated spots before heading out on scenic rides together.
Donny, the other half of the beloved DonBelle tandem, also loves how cycling offers a unique and immersive way to experience different roads and places. "Kasi, halimbawa, kung nasa kotse and you go to these small communities, hindi mo masyadong na-e-experience 'yun, wala kang naririnig o naaamoy. But when you're biking, feeling mo talaga nando'n ka," he shares.
His cycling escapades have taken him to so many incredible communities, and the best part, is that he feels a genuine sense of belonging in every place he visits. He loves connecting with the locals, who often strike up a chat or offer him water when he gets thirsty mid-ride. "It's the feeling of being free in an area na hindi mo masyadong pinupuntahan," expressed the "How To Spot A Red Flag" star.
So, what’s his advice for anyone curious about trying biking? Just start. "Sometimes we overthink. 'Baka hindi ko kaya?' Baka mahirap 'yan, eh. Baka nakakatakot 'yan.' Ang dami nating tanong pero hindi mo malalaman 'yan hangga't wala ka pa doon." And if fear is holding you back, Donny suggests using training wheels if you need to; as long as you’re getting out there and giving it a try, don’t worry about what others think!
"It's just about getting yourself out there and see if you like it or not," he says.
