MANILA - "Sunshine," the critically acclaimed film starring actress-singer Maris Racal, will finally hit Philippine cinemas this July without cuts.
The film was rated R-16 by the Movie & Television Review & Classification Board (MTRCB).
According to MTRCB website, "Sunshine" was rated R-16 for "very sensitive themes that depict child abuse, child rape, drugs, pre-marital sex, teen-age pregnancy and abortion that is not suitable for audiences below16 years of age."
"Further discussion of these very sensitive topics are encouraged between families, especially teen-agers and young adults, as well as seeking guidance and counseling from professionals," it added.
In a social media post on Tuesday, June 3, Project 8 Projects, confirmed that "Sunshine" will be shown in local cinemas next month.
Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, "Sunshine" follows the story of a young gymnast who finds out she is pregnant on the week of the national team tryouts. On her way to a seller of illegal abortion drugs, she meets a mysterious girl who eerily talks like her.
Just last April, Racal attended the premiere of "Sunshine" at the Far East Film Festival in Italy, one of the largest Asian film festivals in Europe.
Last February, the film took home the Crystal Bear award at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.

"Sunshine" was also part of the prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival under the World Cinema Now section.
In October 2024, it received a nomination for Best Youth Film at the 17th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.
