August 4 has become a memorable date in Philippine sports history after two Filipino champions achieved historic victories exactly two years apart.
Carlos Yulo captured his second Olympic gold medal on August 4, 2024, while Alex Eala claimed her first WTA (Women's Tennis Association) singles title and delivered another milestone for the Philippines on the same date in 2026.
Carlos secured his second gold medal at the Paris Olympics after winning the men’s artistic gymnastics vault final. The victory came just one day after he won gold in the men’s floor exercise final on August 3.
Reflecting on his historic two-gold campaign, Carlos admitted in a 2024 interview with One Sports that he did not expect the outcome of his performance in the vault final.
"Ang maging safe ako, healthy, walang ma-injury sa amin, ayun lang talaga. Hindi ko inexpect na ganun 'yung kalalabasan ng vault ko so hindi talaga ako makapaniwala kanina."
The Filipino gymnast shared that he entered the final with a relaxed mindset and gave everything he had.
"Relaxed lang ako kanina. Parang, ‘Sige, kahit ano na lang. Wala namang mawawala sa'kin.’ All out na po. Ganoon na [ang] feeling ko. Crazy talaga ng experience na 'to, grabe," he pointed out.
Carlos dedicated his two Olympic gold medals to the people who believed in him throughout his journey.
"[Sa] mga taong naniwala sa akin talaga ng totoo para sa kanila ito lahat," he said at that time.
Two years later, Alex made history by defeating US tennis star Jessica Pegula to capture the 2026 Mubadala DC Open title.
The Filipina tennis sensation rallied from a set down to overcome the tournament’s top seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, in the final.
The victory marked the first WTA singles title of Alex’s career. She also became the first Filipino tennis player to win a WTA Tour singles title.
Following her triumph, the 21-year-old athlete reflected on the heartwarming support she received from her family, friends, and fans throughout the tournament.

"Before the final yesterday, I got so many messages, sweet messages from my family and my friends who are on tour, wherever else in the world. I thought to myself, I feel so much love," Alexa shared in her post-match interview.
"So standing here in the middle of all this love, my first chance at a title, knowing that it won't be my last, and already having achieved this feat and this milestone for my career, I knew that whatever would have happened after this match, it would have already been a win for me," she added.
Alex expressed her gratitude to the Filipino fans who supported her in Washington, D.C., back home, and around the world.
"Thank you to all my supporters, especially the Filipino community here in DC and back home, and wherever you are in the world... I feel all the love. Maraming, maraming salamat mga kababayan," she remarked.
