Veteran Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has been placed into an induced coma in Portugal following an emergency intestinal surgery, prompting an outpouring of concern and prayers from fans worldwide.
On May 7, Bonnie’s representative shared a statement on her official Facebook page confirming that the singer had been admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she owns a home. According to the statement, the 74-year-old artist underwent emergency intestinal surgery.
“The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”
On May 8, another update regarding the singer’s condition was released, saying that doctors had placed her into an induced coma to help aid her recovery.
“Thank you for the incredible outpouring of love and well wishes we've received for Bonnie over the last few days. It truly means the world,” the post began.
“Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery. We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time, please. We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”
The updates regarding Bonnie’s health were also posted on her official website, with supporters quickly flooding social media with messages for the legendary singer best known for her 1983 mega-hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart”.
Many fans expressed hope that Bonnie’s strength and resilience would help her overcome the difficult situation.
“Bonnie has such a powerful spirit and an unforgettable voice that has touched generations. I sincerely hope she recovers well and continues to enjoy strength, peace, and good health. Bonnie’s guitarist, Ed Poole, also addressed the situation through a social media post.
“I’m aware of the ongoing news about the Bonnie situation and appreciate everyone that’s reached out about it. I’m afraid I don’t have any information for anyone other than what’s already in the press,” he wrote in a post.
“All I can say is that myself and the rest of the band are hoping and praying that she pulls through.”
The health scare comes just weeks before Bonnie was expected to begin a 30-date tour scheduled to run from late May until December. As of this writing, it remains unclear whether the concerts will push through as planned. For now, fans continue to hold on to hope and send prayers for the singer.
