Kapuso actress Jasmine Curtis slammed Quezon City Congressman Bong Suntay over his statement about her sister, Anne Curtis, last March 3. In a series of posts on her official X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts, the celebrity sister expressed her disgust and disappointment.
The politician previously expressed during the March 3 House justice committee hearing on the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte that he had “desires” after seeing Anne in public.
“Lastly, alam mo naman minsan nasa Shangri-la ako. Nakita ko si Anne Curtis–– ang ganda ganda pala niya. You know, may desire so loob ko na nag init talaga at naimagine ko nalang kung anong pwedeng mangyari pero siyempre hanggang imagination nalang yun. Pero, di naman siguro ako kasuhan dahil kung ano-ano yung naimagine ko eh. Thank you very much, Madam Chair,” Bong previously shared.
After seeing the post-interview of the Quezon City representative, Jasmine shared how disgusted she felt.
“RESPECTFULLY, BONG SUNTAY, WHAT ON EARTH??? BAKIT GANON ANG THINKING?” she shared.
“WHAT A DISGUSTING MAN. A FATHER. A HUSBAND,” she continued.
Meanwhile, in her Facebook post, she explained how it wasn’t just about her sister–– it was for all the women who are being “reduced to bodies” by those men in power.
“This moment is not about one female celebrity. It is about how ALL WOMEN, regardless of profession, continue to be reduced to bodies in spaces dominated by men in power,” she wrote.
“When a congressman publicly narrates his 'desire' and imagination about a woman he once saw (or dreams he saw, idk (I don't know) his statements keep changing), it reinforces a culture that treats women as consumable, as spectacle, as fantasy, as objects for commentary rather than as whole human beings with agency, intellect, and autonomy,” she continued.
Jasmine made sure to add in her post how the comments made towards her sister are neither “just being honest" nor "just a compliment.”
“Respect is not complicated. If we want safer environments for our daughters, nieces, and future leaders, accountability must begin with those elected to represent us,” she ended
Various celebrities have come forward to show their support towards Anne in the hope that the congressman would apologize for his comment. Other netizens hope that Anne would take legal action as well.
